When is rush hour in Dubai?
Dubai rush hour on weekdays runs roughly 6 to 10 am and 4 to 8 pm. Salik, the toll operator, uses exactly those windows for its AED 6 peak rate from Monday to Saturday, a useful marker because it is published (see the Salik tolls guide).
TomTom’s 2025 index for Dubai puts a 10 km trip at about 18 minutes 41 seconds in the morning rush and 26 minutes 33 seconds in the evening. It names 5 pm as the worst hour. The evening is the harder one.
Which roads are worst?
| Road | Where it slows |
|---|---|
| Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) | Between the World Trade Centre and Dubai Marina, both directions |
| Al Khail Road | Business Bay and Festival City sections |
| E311 and Al Ittihad Road | The Sharjah and Ajman border, inbound in the morning |
| Airport Road | Around Al Garhoud and the DXB terminal approaches |
If you stay in Sharjah or Ajman, the border roads set your whole day. Our Sharjah getting-around guide covers the options on that side.

How does traffic change across the week and the weekend?
The Salik rate shows the pattern. Monday to Saturday carries the AED 6 peak, while Sunday is AED 4 all day, apart from public holidays and events. Check the UAE public holidays before you plan a long run, because holiday eves can jam the roads out of the city.
How much time should you allow for the airport?
Use free-flow times as the floor, then add a buffer.
| Run | Without traffic | Peak planning |
|---|---|---|
| DXB to Dubai Marina | about 30 to 33 min | add 30 to 60 min |
| DXB to Sharjah International (SHJ) | about 22 min | add 30 to 45 min |
| Dubai to Abu Dhabi (city centres) | about 1 h 28 min | add 45 to 60 min |
The free-flow figures come from OSRM routing on OpenStreetMap data. The peak additions are our planning advice, not measured times. For check-in cut-offs, read the airport departure timing guide. If you land at DXB at peak, an airport transfer driver follows your flight and avoids waiting at a kerb.

Rush hour in Ramadan
Office hours shorten during Ramadan and the roads fill in the hour before iftar. Leave meetings early enough to be home or at the table. Dates and hours change each year, so see Ramadan timings in Dubai.
Events that jam the roads
Exhibitions at the Dubai World Trade Centre, concerts at Coca-Cola Arena and New Year’s Eve around Downtown all add traffic on top of the commute. Our event road closures guide lists what to expect. Agree a pickup point away from the venue gate before you go in.

How chauffeurs plan around traffic
A driver checks live traffic before leaving, picks between Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road and the coastal route, and messages you on WhatsApp if the plan changes. Assure is RTA licensed and answers 24/7 on WhatsApp and phone. For a day of meetings, a chauffeur service by the hour avoids parking and re-routing between stops. For teams, see corporate transport and the business trip ground transport guide.
Planning a meeting day
- Book back-to-back meetings in the same district, not across Sheikh Zayed Road.
- Put cross-city trips between 10 am and 4 pm.
- Leave a 30-minute gap after any meeting you must reach by 5 pm.
The wider city is covered in the Dubai travel guide.
