Is Hatta in Dubai or Oman?
Hatta is in Dubai. It is an exclave of the emirate, which means it is cut off from the main part of Dubai by other territory. Wikipedia places it in the Hajar Mountains about 134 km east of the city, at an elevation of 330 m.

Oman lies to the east and south of the town. Masfout, an Ajman exclave, is to the west, and Ras Al Khaimah to the north. That geography is why people ask about passports, but the town itself, its dam and its heritage village are all inside the UAE.
Do you need a passport or visa to go to Hatta?
You need no visa for Hatta, because you do not leave the UAE. Residents and visitors who hold a valid UAE visa are already entitled to be there.
Carry your passport or Emirates ID anyway. Part of the main road passes close to the border, and it is the sensible habit on any long drive. We found no official rule in the sources we could read that asks visitors to show documents at Hatta itself. If you want to be certain for your date, confirm with Dubai Police.
If you plan to continue into Oman, the rules change. You then need Oman entry rights, and your UAE visa must allow you back in. Our Hatta border crossing guide goes through both posts.
Which road to Hatta can visitors use?
There are two roads, and which one you take changes the drive.
| Route | What it is | From Downtown Dubai |
|---|---|---|
| E44 | The direct Dubai to Hatta road, through Al Awir and Al Madam | about 114 km to the border post, 1 h 27 min |
| E102 via Sharjah and Kalba | The route Visit Hatta calls usually the quickest | Confirm on the day |
The E44 is the direct road. On OSRM figures, about 20 km of it runs on the Omani-numbered N7, a short stretch of Omani territory near Al Madam. That is why older reports said non-GCC drivers were diverted away from it.
We could not find a current statement from Dubai Police or the RTA on that restriction. So we plan visitor trips on the road Visit Hatta recommends, and ask us on WhatsApp if you want the E44 and we will check the position for your date. A chauffeur from Assure picks the road on the day.
Is there a checkpoint on the way to Hatta?
We found no official statement of a visitor checkpoint on the way to the town. The border posts are further on. On OpenStreetMap, Hatta Border Post and Wajajah Border Post stand a few hundred metres apart beyond the town.
The German Embassy listed Hatta and Al Wajajah as open around the clock on 2 March 2026. A visit to the dam or village never reaches them. Distances from the town to the post are in our Hatta border crossing guide.
Getting to Hatta Dam and the Heritage Village
By car, Visit Hatta puts the drive from Dubai at about 90 minutes, and the Hatta Dam guide covers the lake, the kayaks and the viewpoints. By bus, the RTA Hatta Express H02 leaves Dubai Mall for Hatta Main Bus Station in about 1.5 hours, at AED 25 with a Nol card. From there, the H204 hop-on hop-off bus serves the main sights.

A private car suits families and groups who want the dam, the heritage village and the mountain roads in one day with a stop for lunch. See our Hatta day tour or book the car alone as an intercity transfer. The Hatta Dam guide lists what to do at the water.
Going on to Oman from Hatta: what changes at the border
Past Hatta town you reach two posts. The UAE post is Hatta, the Omani post is Al Wajajah.
- Vehicles only. The German Embassy states the Oman crossings cannot be used on foot.
- Oman entry rights. An eVisa, a visa on arrival for those who qualify, or the 14-day exemption for citizens of listed countries.
- UAE re-entry. GDRFA Dubai calls its single-entry tourist visa a visa for one visit. Leaving ends it.
If Oman is the real plan, the guide to every UAE and Oman crossing compares the posts. The coast route out of Fujairah is covered in our Dubai to Khor Fakkan guide, and the road travel from Dubai hub lists the rest.
