Wedding photography permit in Dubai: do you need one for photos or a drone?

Photos inside a hotel venue follow that venue's rules. Commercial shoots in public places in Dubai may need a permit from the Dubai Film and TV Commission, and drones need several approvals. We cannot give you a permit ruling, so ask your photographer which permits they hold and confirm with the authority. Assure drives the couple between stops.

Wedding photographers in Dubai work in hotel ballrooms, on beaches and in the desert, and the rules differ at each. We are a chauffeur company, so we do not issue permits or rule on them. This page sets out the questions to ask, and who to ask, so the permit is settled before the car leaves.

Do wedding photographers need a permit in Dubai?

Possibly. It depends on three things: where the photos are taken, whether the shoot is commercial or a family snapshot, and what equipment is used.

The Dubai Film and TV Commission (DFTC) is the body to ask about commercial filming and photography in public places in Dubai. Ask your photographer whether they hold a permit for your stops, and ask to see it. A photographer who answers “it is fine” without naming the permit has not answered.

We cannot confirm the permit scope, the timing or the fee from here. Treat any figure you read on a forum as unverified until the authority confirms it.

Hotel venues versus public places

Inside a hotel or resort venue, the venue sets the rules. Most have an events team that can tell you:

  • which photographers are approved or must be registered
  • whether tripods, lights and second shooters are allowed
  • where the couple can shoot in the grounds and where guests cannot go
  • whether drones are banned

In public places, such as a beach, a promenade, a park or a desert road, the authority that manages the place decides. That is where the permit question matters, and where a refused stop can cost you the light.

If a stop on your list is refused on the day, tell your chauffeur at once. The car can move to the next stop. Our guide to wedding photo locations with a car lists stops in the order a day usually runs, so you have a second choice nearby.

Heritage sites and museums: Dubai Culture’s rules

Dubai Culture manages heritage sites, and it has an approvals process for shooting at the sites it runs. Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is the one wedding photographers ask about most.

Contact Dubai Culture before you plan the stop. Give it the date, the site, the number of people and the equipment. Then tell your photographer what the answer was.

A planned shoot with a crew is not the same as a phone photo of the couple. Do not assume that because a lane looks public, a full shoot is allowed.

Can you fly a drone at a wedding in Dubai?

Do not bring a drone and fly it. Drone use in Dubai involves several approvals from aviation and filming authorities, and an unapproved flight can bring penalties. We have not verified the current process, fees or restricted zones, so we do not state them.

The safe route:

  1. Ask the photographer whether drone shots are part of the package.
  2. If yes, ask which approvals they hold and ask to see them.
  3. Ask the venue separately. A hotel can refuse a drone even when the pilot is approved.
  4. Have a plan for the day if the drone is grounded, such as wind or a refused stop.

Do not ask a chauffeur to wait with a drone in the car at a location where flying is not approved.

Dubai asks visitors to take care when photographing people. Visit Dubai’s safety guide has a section on photographing people. The habit that keeps you safe is simple: ask first, and keep strangers out of the frame.

This matters at a wedding because the photos go online. Posting an image of someone who did not agree can become a legal problem, whatever you intended. UAE law on this is something we have not verified here, so check the legislation portal or take advice if you plan to publish photos with guests or passers-by in them.

At a venue, tell the photographer which guests do not want to be photographed or posted.

What to ask your photographer before the day

Send these questions in writing a week ahead:

  1. Which of my stops need a permit, and do you hold it?
  2. Who applies, and how long does it take?
  3. Is a drone included, and what approvals does the pilot hold?
  4. What is the plan if a stop is refused?
  5. How long do you need at each stop?

Then send the answers to your chauffeur, with the stops in order. The car waits only where it is allowed to, so the list needs to be accurate. Our wedding car hire page shows the cars we arrange, and the limousine service page covers longer bookings. For the full day, read the wedding transport guide.

If the shoot starts with a surprise, our guide to places to propose in Dubai applies the same permit logic to a proposal photographer. If your venue is on the Palm, the Palm Jumeirah arrival guide covers the access road.

Questions and answers

Do wedding photographers need a permit in Dubai?

It depends on where and how they shoot. Inside a hotel venue, the venue sets the rules. In public places, a commercial shoot may need a permit from the Dubai Film and TV Commission. We are a chauffeur company and do not issue or rule on permits, so ask your photographer which permits they hold and check with the authority.

Can I fly a drone at my wedding in Dubai?

Do not fly one until you have written approval. Drone flying in Dubai involves several authorities, including aviation and filming bodies, and flying without approval can bring penalties. Hire a photographer who holds the approvals and ask to see them, rather than bringing your own drone to the venue.

Do I need a permit to photograph at Al Fahidi or other heritage sites?

Heritage sites are managed by Dubai Culture, which has its own approvals for shooting at its sites. Ask Dubai Culture before you plan the stop, and tell your photographer which site you want. Casual photos on a phone are a different matter from a planned shoot with a crew, a tripod or lights.

Can guests photograph the wedding at a hotel?

Guests usually take phone photos at a hotel wedding, but the venue sets its own rules on cameras, tripods and drones. Ask the hotel's events team, and tell guests before the day if there are limits. Ask them too about photographing other guests, which brings in the privacy points below.

Is it legal to photograph strangers in Dubai?

Be careful. Visit Dubai's safety guide has a section on photographing people, and asking permission first is the safe habit. Keep strangers out of the frame unless they agree. Publishing a person's image online without consent can be a legal problem, so check the law before you post.

What should I ask my photographer before the wedding day?

Ask which permits they hold for each location, whether they have drone approval, who applies and when, and what happens if a stop is refused on the day. Ask for the answer in writing. Then give your chauffeur the list of stops, so the car can wait where it is allowed to.
