The Sheikh Zayed Festival is Abu Dhabi’s long winter fair at Al Wathba, out in the desert past the capital. From Dubai it is a half-day commitment, so the plan matters more than the programme.

When is the Sheikh Zayed Festival this season?

Khaleej Times reported on 14 October 2026 that the 2026-27 season opens on 30 October 2026 and runs 136 days to 14 March 2027. It is open daily at Al Wathba South. The previous season ran from 1 November 2025 to 22 March 2026, so the dates move each year.

The festival’s own site did not show the new dates when we checked on 17 October 2026. Tickets are booked there at zayedfestival.ae. Opening hours and prices are not published in the sources we found, so confirm both on the booking page.

What the season is built around:

  • Heritage Village, with crafts and folk performances
  • The Emirates Fountain and Laser Show
  • More than 15 international pavilions
  • Layali Al Wathba concerts on the main stage in the previous season

Where is Al Wathba, and how long is the drive from Dubai?

Al Wathba sits south-east of Abu Dhabi city, inland from the coast road. Most of the drive from Dubai is on the E11 to Abu Dhabi, then a short run out to the festival.

OSRM figures, checked on 17 October 2026 with approximate festival coordinates:

From Road distance Without traffic
Dubai Marina about 123 km about 1 h 15
Downtown Dubai about 144 km about 1 h 30
Dubai International (DXB) about 158 km about 1 h 45
Central Abu Dhabi about 46 km about 35 minutes

That is a return of 250 to 320 km. Our Dubai to Abu Dhabi transfer page covers the main leg. The festival is the extra stretch beyond it.

Is there parking at the festival?

We could not confirm it. Neither the festival site nor the Khaleej Times report describes parking, a drop-off zone or a shuttle. Write to info@zayedfestival.ae, the contact on the site, if you plan to drive yourself.

With a booked car, the driver follows the marshals on the night and sends you the exact meeting point on WhatsApp. Pick a point away from the main gate queue and screenshot it.

Which nights have fireworks, and how bad is the traffic?

Khaleej Times reports a fireworks show every Saturday of the season, plus fireworks on National Day and New Year’s Eve. The official site shows drone shows at 9:30 pm for the previous season’s opening days, Eid al-Fitr and New Year’s Eve. Dates for this season belong on zayedfestival.ae, so check the week you travel.

Plan around three pinch points:

  • Leaving Dubai on a Saturday afternoon, when roads out of Dubai are busy.
  • The festival exit after a late show, when every car leaves at once.
  • The E11 back after 10pm, which is quieter but long and dark.

For the biggest fireworks night, read our New Year’s Eve fireworks guide first.

Taxi, bus or car with a driver from Dubai?

Option What to know
Taxi Metered, long. You must arrange a return ride from a remote site
Intercity bus Goes to Abu Dhabi, not to Al Wathba. We found no direct service
Self-drive Cheap for one family, but you drive 250 to 320 km in one night
Car with driver Door to door, waits for the return. See our car with driver page
Van or minibus One vehicle for a group. See van and group transport

For 7 to 13 people, a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is the usual choice, and a Mercedes-Benz V-Class suits up to 6. Bigger groups can use a coach through our partner network, subject to availability. Quotes arrive on WhatsApp.

Abu Dhabi charges tolls on Darb gates, AED 4 per crossing. Ghantoot and Al Qurm charge around the clock. Read the Darb tolls guide and ask us to state tolls in your quote.

Combining the festival with a day in Abu Dhabi

Leave Dubai after breakfast, spend the afternoon in the capital, and reach Al Wathba for sunset. Central Abu Dhabi is about 46 km from the festival. Book the car by the hour and it stays with you from Dubai to the festival and back. Our events service explains how we plan these days.

Two other seasonal trips sit nearby on the calendar. The Liwa Festival is a much longer drive into Al Dhafra, and the Sharjah Light Festival is the short trip from Dubai. Global Village, closer to home, has its own timings guide. For the full season, see the UAE events calendar.

Festival trip checklist

  • Tickets booked on zayedfestival.ae.
  • Dates and show times confirmed in the week you travel.
  • Meeting point saved after the show, not at the gate.
  • Driver told your return time, and a fuel and rest stop agreed.
  • A warm layer for an evening in the open desert.

Questions and answers

When is the Sheikh Zayed Festival 2026 to 2027?

Khaleej Times reported on 14 October 2026 that the season opens on 30 October 2026 and runs 136 days to 14 March 2027, open daily at Al Wathba South. The festival's own site did not show the new dates when we checked. Confirm on zayedfestival.ae, where tickets are booked, before you travel.

Where is the Sheikh Zayed Festival?

At Al Wathba, in the desert south-east of Abu Dhabi city. Khaleej Times places the 2026-27 season at Al Wathba South. The site is about 46 km and 33 minutes by road from central Abu Dhabi, and about 144 km and 1 h 30 from Downtown Dubai without traffic, on OSRM figures.

How long is the drive from Dubai to the Sheikh Zayed Festival?

Allow 1 h 15 to 1 h 45 each way without traffic. OSRM gives about 123 km from Dubai Marina, 144 km from Downtown Dubai and 158 km from Dubai International. Friday and Saturday evenings run slower on the E11, so plan to arrive before dark.

Is there parking at the Sheikh Zayed Festival?

We could not confirm the parking arrangements. The festival's website and the Khaleej Times report do not describe parking or any shuttle. Ask the organiser at info@zayedfestival.ae or on the ticket booking page. With a booked car, the driver follows the marshals and sends you the meeting point on WhatsApp.

Which nights have fireworks at the Sheikh Zayed Festival?

Khaleej Times reports a fireworks show every Saturday of the season, plus National Day and New Year's Eve. The festival site lists drone shows for the opening days, Eid al-Fitr and New Year's Eve in the previous season. Dates for this season should be checked on zayedfestival.ae in the week you travel.

Is there a bus or taxi from Dubai to the Sheikh Zayed Festival?

Intercity buses go to Abu Dhabi, but we found no scheduled service to Al Wathba, so you would still need a taxi for the last leg. A taxi from Dubai is a long metered trip. A pre-booked car or van with a driver goes door to door and waits for the return.

Do I pay Darb tolls on the way?

Abu Dhabi's Darb gates charge AED 4 per crossing. The Ghantoot and Al Qurm gates charge around the clock since 4 May 2026, and older gates charge at peak hours. Which gates you pass depends on your route. Our Darb guide lists timings, and Assure states in the quote whether tolls are included.
