Visa-free countries for UAE residents: what your passport and residence permit allow

Your passport, not your UAE residence permit, decides where you can travel visa-free. The permit adds a smaller set of options, such as Oman's route for 24 nationalities with GCC residence. Check the destination government's own page for your passport, then confirm your residence permit's remaining validity before you book.

Passport or residence permit: which one decides where you can go?

Your passport decides. A destination’s immigration service reads the nationality on the cover first, and only then asks about your status as a UAE resident.

The residence permit still matters in three ways. Some governments make it a condition of a simplified entry. Most ask that it stays valid for a set period beyond your return. And your airline will check that you can return to the UAE before it lets you board.

Treat the UAE visa on your passport as a document for coming home, not a ticket to anywhere. Our hub on UAE visas explained covers the entry side.

Which countries let UAE residents in without a visa?

No honest single list exists. Blogs that count 70, 100 or 140 countries disagree because they mix visa-free, visa on arrival and e-visa, and each mixes passports differently. Assure does not publish a total.

Assure has confirmed only a narrow set from official pages, all in the GCC:

Country What the official page says Checked
Oman More than 100 nationalities visa-free for up to 14 days, with conditions. A second group of 24 nationalities qualifies with extra conditions, including GCC residence. 2026-10-17
Saudi Arabia eVisa open to GCC residence visa holders in listed professions, with at least 3 months of residence validity left. 2026-10-17
Qatar GCC nationals are visa-free. Residents of other GCC states use the GCC Resident Visa (A2) through Hayya. 2026-10-17

For anywhere else, such as Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Thailand or Egypt, go to that country’s foreign ministry or e-visa portal and select your passport. We leave those rows out until we can cite the official page for them.

Where can UAE residents get a visa on arrival?

Visa on arrival means you buy or receive the visa at the destination’s border post. The conditions come from the destination, usually by passport, and the UAE residence permit is sometimes one of them.

Before you rely on it, check three things on the official page: the length of stay, the fee, and how long your passport and residence permit must remain valid. A count of days you were allowed last year is not a source.

Which countries offer e-visas to UAE residents?

An e-visa is approved online before you fly. Oman’s Royal Oman Police eVisa and the Saudi eVisa are the two GCC examples above. The UK works differently: the UK electronic travel authorisation costs GBP 20 on GOV.UK and covers visits of up to 6 months for eligible nationalities.

Use only the government portal. Look-alike sites charge more and add nothing.

How much residence-permit validity do these countries ask for?

It varies, and it is the rule people miss. Saudi Arabia asks for a GCC residence visa with at least 3 months left. Many airlines also refuse boarding if your passport is close to expiry, so renew early. Allow time for the renewal as well as the trip. The documents checklist for UAE residents lists what to pack.

Do you need travel insurance or a return ticket on a visa-free trip?

Often yes, even when no visa is needed. Check the destination’s page for insurance, a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation and funds. Airlines apply their own checks at the DXB check-in desk, and a missing ticket is the commonest reason for a refused boarding.

When you still need an embassy visa

For most passports, these destinations need a visa or authorisation before you fly:

  • Schengen states: apply at the consulate of the country where you will spend the longest stay, 6 months to 15 days before travel. The EU lists EUR 90 for adults and 15 days normal processing. See Schengen visas from Dubai and the easiest Schengen visa from Dubai.
  • United Kingdom, United States and Canada: an ETA, ESTA or visa depending on your passport. Our UK ETA, US ESTA and Canada eTA guide sets out the differences.
  • China and Japan: see the pages for China and Japan.
  • Turkey: passports differ between e-visa and sticker visa. Start at the Turkey visa page.

How this list is kept current

Every fact above has a source and a checked date in the sources list. If the date is old when you read it, treat the row as out of date. All visa services are listed under visas. When you have your visa, we can plan the airport transfer at DXB for the day you fly.

Questions and answers

Does a UAE residence visa let me travel visa-free?

Not by itself. Most countries set entry rules by passport. A residence permit only matters where a government names it as a condition, as Oman does for a second group of 24 nationalities that qualify through GCC residence in an eligible profession. For every other country, start from your passport and check the destination's official page.

Which countries give a visa on arrival to UAE residents?

There is no single list. Each country decides, and many offer visa on arrival or an e-visa by passport, with the residence permit as a condition. Assure has confirmed only the Oman and Saudi GCC-resident routes from official pages. For any other country, use its immigration or foreign ministry site and check the date on the page.

What do I need to show at the border as a UAE resident?

Expect to show a passport valid for the period the destination asks for, your Emirates ID or residence permit, and often a return or onward ticket and proof of accommodation. Requirements differ by country, so read the destination's page. Saudi Arabia, for example, asks for a residence visa with at least 3 months left.

Do I need a visa for Oman if I live in the UAE?

It depends on your passport. Oman exempts more than 100 nationalities for up to 14 days with conditions. A second group of 24 nationalities, including India and Egypt according to the UAE Government summary, can qualify through GCC residence in an eligible profession. Check the Royal Oman Police eVisa rules before the border.

Which visas must a UAE resident still get from an embassy?

For most passports, Schengen countries, the UK, the US, Canada, Japan and China still need a visa or authorisation arranged before you fly. Schengen applications go to the consulate of your longest stay, 6 months to 15 days before travel. Assure can talk you through the documents on WhatsApp.

How current is a visa-free list?

Treat any list as a starting point. Governments change entry rules without much notice, and the UAE's own portal says its lists vary from time to time. Check the official page in the week you book, and again before you fly. Each fact on this page carries the date Assure last checked it.
