Dubai or Abu Dhabi: which is better for a holiday?
Pick Dubai if you want the most to do within a short drive: the skyline around Downtown Dubai, the beaches along Jumeirah, the Marina and the evening scene. Pick Abu Dhabi if you want a calmer pace, with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Yas Island as the main draws.
Most first-time visitors with 5 days or more do both. They sleep in one city and make a long day trip to the other, or they split the stay.
Sights and culture compared
Dubai is spread along one long coast. Places to visit in Dubai runs from Dubai Creek and the old souks to the towers of Downtown Dubai.

Abu Dhabi concentrates its big cultural sights in three places. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is on the mainland side. Qasr Al Watan and the Corniche are on the island. The Saadiyat Cultural District holds the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena, per Visit Abu Dhabi.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre lists Saturday to Thursday 9:00 to 20:30, and Friday 9:00 to 11:30 and 14:30 to 20:30. Visitors from outside the UAE pay AED 10 to get in. Read the mosque visitor guide before you go, because it has a dress code.
Beaches, resorts and theme parks
Dubai’s beach strip runs from Jumeirah to JBR and Palm Jumeirah, with hotels and public sections side by side. Abu Dhabi’s beach stays are concentrated on Saadiyat Island and along the Corniche.

For theme parks, Yas Island is the Abu Dhabi answer: Ferrari World and its neighbours share one island 17 km from Zayed International Airport. Our Yas Island theme parks comparison and tour page cover tickets and transfers. Dubai’s parks and attractions are spread along the coast, so you drive between them.
Prices and crowds
We do not publish a price comparison, because we could not source a fair one. What we can say is about layout. Abu Dhabi’s attractions sit on separate islands and the mainland, so you spend more time in the car between them. Dubai’s are spread along one long coast, which means similar driving.

Compare hotel rates for your own dates on one booking site, then add the cost of getting around. Where you stay matters more than the city: see where to stay in Dubai and where to stay in Abu Dhabi.
How far apart are they, and how do you travel between them?
Dubai Marina to the Abu Dhabi Corniche is about 124 km by road, 78 minutes without traffic (OSRM, measured 17 October 2026). Dubai International to Zayed International is about 129 km, 89 minutes. Expect 1 h 30 to 2 h in traffic.
| Option | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Private car | 1 h 20 to 2 h door to door | Ghantoot and Al Qurm Darb gates charge AED 4 round the clock; see Darb tolls |
| RTA bus E100 or E101 | about 1 h 12 to 1 h 35 on the road | AED 25, ends at Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station in Al Wahda; see the bus guide |
| Etihad Rail | 64 minutes station to station | 5 trains a day each way, from AED 39; stations are outside both centres |

One base or two? Sample 5-day and 7-day plans
5 days, one base in Dubai
- Days 1 to 3: Dubai, with a desert evening if you want one.
- Day 4: a full day in Abu Dhabi. Start at the mosque, then Qasr Al Watan and the Louvre. Our Abu Dhabi city tour follows that route.
- Day 5: Dubai and departure.
7 days, two bases
- Days 1 to 4: Dubai.
- Day 5: transfer to Abu Dhabi. Check in on Saadiyat or the Corniche.
- Days 5 to 7: mosque, Louvre, Yas Island, then a transfer to the airport you fly from.
The second plan saves a daily 3-hour round trip and suits travellers who like to unpack once. If you plan one day only, the Abu Dhabi tour and Abu Dhabi chauffeur service give you a driver for the day. Start your reading with places to visit in Abu Dhabi and getting around Abu Dhabi.
