Hourly chauffeur vs transfer is a choice between two ways to sell the same car and driver in Dubai: for a route, or for a stretch of time. Pick the wrong one and you either pay for hours the car spends parked, or you book four transfers for a day that needed one car. The test below takes a minute, and the three sample days show where the line falls.
What is the difference between an hourly booking and a transfer?
| Fixed transfer | Hourly hire | |
|---|---|---|
| Priced by | The route, one way or return | A block of hours with a minimum |
| Waiting | A free period set in the quote, then charged | Inside the block you booked |
| Stops | None, or agreed when you book | As many as fit in the block |
| After drop-off | The car leaves | The car waits nearby for the next leg |
| Plans change | A new leg needs a new quote | Tell the driver and carry on |
| Fits | Airport runs, one-way trips between cities | Meeting days, shopping, sightseeing, events |
The trade often calls a transfer “point to point” and hourly hire “as directed”. Both are booked through the car with driver service or as a chauffeur for business days.
When is a fixed transfer the better buy?
A transfer wins when the journey has one start, one end and nothing in between.
- An airport arrival. A Dubai Marina hotel is about 37 km from DXB, 42 minutes on clear roads. You need the car for under an hour, so an hourly minimum would be wasted. Airport pickups with meet and greet are booked under UAE airport transfers.
- A one-way trip to another city. Central Abu Dhabi sits about 139 km by road from Downtown Dubai. If you stay there overnight, book Dubai to Abu Dhabi as a fixed transfer and a second one for the return.
- One long meeting. JBR to the DIFC Gate Building is about 24 km and 22 minutes. With a 3-hour meeting in between, compare two transfers with a 5-hour block. The block pays for a car that sits parked near DIFC.
When does hourly hire start to make sense?
Hourly hire pays off when the car would otherwise make several trips with short gaps between them. Use it when any of these is true:
- The day has three or more stops.
- The gaps between stops are short, so a new car for each leg would barely arrive in time.
- Bags, samples or shopping need to stay in the boot all day.
- The finish time is unknown, such as a meeting that may run over or a dinner after a show.
- You want a car on call outside a venue, not a car you need to summon.
If only one of these applies, price both ways. Send the plan on WhatsApp and ask for a transfer quote and an hourly quote side by side.
How do minimum hours and overtime work?
Each car class has a minimum block. The quote spells out that minimum, the start of the clock and the price of each hour past the block. A half day and a full day are larger blocks with their own terms.
Overtime is capped by law as well as by price. UAE Labour Law sets a normal working day at 8 hours, or 48 hours a week, with no more than 2 extra hours in a day. A booking that will pass 10 hours is planned with a second driver taking over. Build a little slack into the block on days with events, so a late finish does not hit the limit.
Three sample days with real distances
Distances and times are free-flow figures from OSRM. On weekdays, expect Sheikh Zayed Road to add time to each leg at rush hour.
A meeting day in DIFC and the free zones

| Time | Stop | Leg without traffic |
|---|---|---|
| 08:30 | Pickup at a hotel in JBR | Start |
| 09:15 | Meeting at the DIFC Gate Building | about 24 km, 22 min |
| 12:00 | Lunch meeting in Dubai Internet City | about 20 km, 18 min |
| 14:30 | Site visit in Dubai Silicon Oasis | about 31 km, 30 min |
| 17:30 | Back to JBR | about 34 km, 31 min |
That is about 109 km and 1 h 40 of driving, spread over 9 hours. As transfers it would be four separate bookings, each with its own wait for a car. Book it hourly, as a full day. Laptops, samples and a jacket for the evening stay in the boot between meetings.
A shopping day across two malls

| Time | Stop | Leg without traffic |
|---|---|---|
| 10:00 | Pickup at a hotel in Dubai Marina | Start |
| 10:30 | Dubai Mall, for about 4 hours | about 22 km, 20 min |
| 15:00 | Souk Madinat Jumeirah | about 16 km, 16 min |
| 18:30 | Back to Dubai Marina | about 8 km, 12 min |
Under 50 minutes of driving in 8 and a half hours. The case for hourly hire here is the bags: each stop adds shopping, and the boot holds it all. Book it hourly, as a full day, or drop the second mall and it fits a half day. If you will spend the whole day in Dubai Mall and go straight back, ask for the price of two transfers as well.
A day trip to Abu Dhabi with three stops

| Time | Stop | Leg without traffic |
|---|---|---|
| 08:00 | Pickup at a hotel in Dubai Marina | Start |
| 09:15 | Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque | about 108 km, 1 h 7 min |
| 11:30 | Qasr Al Watan | about 21 km, 19 min |
| 14:00 | Yas Island, near Ferrari World | about 38 km, 32 min |
| 18:00 | Back to Dubai Marina | about 92 km, 1 h |
About 259 km and 3 hours at the wheel, in a 10-hour day. A one-way transfer would leave you with no car between the three Abu Dhabi stops. Book it as a full day, with the driver’s 10-hour limit in mind.
Tolls belong in this quote. Since 4 May 2026, Abu Dhabi’s Ghantoot gate on Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Street takes AED 4 for each crossing, day and night. The rest of the Darb network charges the same AED 4 only in the morning and afternoon peaks, Monday to Saturday. For a guided version of the same day, see the Abu Dhabi city tour.
Can you mix both in one trip?
Yes. A four-day stay might run like this:
- Arrival: a fixed transfer from DXB to the hotel, with meet and greet in the arrivals hall.
- Day 2: a full hourly day of meetings.
- Day 3: a 4-hour evening block for dinner and a show.
- Departure: a fixed transfer back to the airport.
Each piece is quoted on its own terms. Send the whole plan in one message, and every piece can be priced in the same reply. What moves each figure is explained in our guide to what a chauffeur costs in Dubai.
Hourly bookings that cross into another emirate
An hourly day that starts in Dubai can visit Sharjah, about 26 km from Downtown, or Abu Dhabi, and come back. One car and one driver cover all of it.
The rule changes when the hourly block starts and ends inside another emirate. Local work there falls under that emirate’s own transport rules. RTA’s own licence card for the activity points to the Federal Authority for Land and Maritime Transport for work outside Dubai. For those, Assure books a partner licensed in that emirate, and the quote says so. Fixed runs between cities are listed under intercity transfers.
For everything else about choosing a car and a company, start with hiring a chauffeur in Dubai.
