What is Jebel Hafeet, and how do you get there?
Jebel Hafeet is a limestone mountain on the southern edge of Al Ain, close to the Oman border. It stands about 900 m above the surrounding plain. It is the mountain you drive up for the view over the whole oasis city.
Sources give the summit height as anything from 1,240 to 1,249 m. This guide uses “about 1,240 m” and does not claim more precision than the surveys give.
| Start point | Road distance to Al Ain | Free-flow drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Dubai | 136 km | about 1 h 30 |
| Abu Dhabi | 159 km | about 1 h 30 |
These figures, from OSRM routing on OpenStreetMap data, are for Al Ain city. The mountain lies on the city’s southern side, so add time for the last stretch. Traffic and weekend queues change every number.
The practical way to see the summit is a private car. Our Dubai to Al Ain guide covers the road, and the intercity transfers page shows how we quote them.
The mountain road: length, bends and the summit
The Jebel Hafeet Mountain Road is 11.7 km long and was built in 1980. Wikipedia counts about 60 turns and a climb of roughly 1,200 m, with two lanes going up and one coming down. Cyclists treat it as a training climb, and an annual cycling challenge is held on it each January.
For a passenger, that means three things:
- The bends are tight and continuous. Seat anyone prone to car sickness in the front.
- Cyclists share the road. A chauffeur drives slower here than on a motorway.
- At the top there is a car park, a hotel run by Mercure and the viewpoints.

Best viewpoints, and when to go for sunset
The viewpoints at the top look north over Al Ain’s palm groves and the flat desert, and south and east to the Oman side. Go in the last two hours before sunset. The light is softer, and the haze that gathers at midday thins out.
Plan the descent too. After dark the bends need more care, and a long day should not end with a tired self-drive down 11.7 km of hairpins. A hired driver removes that.
The best months are November to March, when the Al Ain plain is warm rather than hot. In summer, go for the last hour of light and expect heat at the foot even if the top is cooler.

Green Mubazzarah and the hot springs at the foot
Green Mubazzarah is a park at the base of the mountain. Wikipedia lists natural springs at around 40 C that feed a lake, plus pools, a play park for children and chalets. It is the usual stop for families before or after the climb.
Opening times, entry rules and which pools are open change. Confirm them with Visit Abu Dhabi before you build a swim into the plan, and pack swimwear only if that is confirmed.
Jebel Hafeet Desert Park and the ancient tombs
At the foothills near Mezyad, archaeologists excavated about 500 beehive tombs. They belong to the Hafit period, roughly 3200 to 2600 BC, and the period takes its name from the mountain. The area is part of the Jebel Hafeet Desert Park, which also includes Mezyad Fort.
Wear closed shoes and bring water. There is little shade, and the ground is rough.

Weather, closures and driving safety
The mountain is cooler than the plain, but in summer the foot of it is still very hot. Fog and rain are rare but can reduce visibility on the bends. Check the forecast and Visit Abu Dhabi notices before you set off.
Carry your passport or Emirates ID. Al Ain lies in the same emirate as Abu Dhabi, so the day trip does not cross a border, though the Oman line is close.
Combining Jebel Hafeet with Al Ain
A full day from Dubai looks like this:
- Leave Dubai early and reach Al Ain in about 1 hour 30 minutes.
- See the oasis and forts in the morning (see places to visit in Al Ain).
- Have lunch in the city, then stop at Green Mubazzarah.
- Drive up Jebel Hafeet for sunset.
- Return to Dubai, arriving about 1 hour 30 minutes after you leave Al Ain.
Our Al Ain city tour follows this shape, and a private tour lets you change the order. If you want a cooler mountain with a zipline instead, read the Jebel Jais guide. For other ideas from the city, see day trips from Dubai. Send us your date and group size on WhatsApp and we plan the day.
