What are the best day trips from Dubai?
Seven places sit within about 2 hours 40 minutes of Downtown Dubai by road, and each fills a day without a hotel night. Six of them stay inside the UAE. Musandam is Omani territory, so it is the only one where the car stops at a border post.
| Day trip | From Downtown Dubai, no traffic | What you go for | Cooler months | Passport |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sharjah | 26 km, about 27 min | Heritage lanes, museums, Al Noor Island | October to April | No |
| Abu Dhabi | 139 km, about 1 h 30 | Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan, the Louvre, Yas Island | October to April | No |
| Al Ain | 136 km, about 1 h 30 | UNESCO oasis, forts, the Jebel Hafit road | November to March | No |
| Hatta | 109 km, about 1 h 25 | Dam kayaks, mountain trails | October to April | Carry ID |
| Fujairah coast | 120 km, about 1 h 30 | Al Bidya Mosque, forts, Snoopy Island | October to April | No |
| Jebel Jais | 154 km, about 2 h | The UAE’s highest road, ziplines | October to April | No |
| Musandam via Dibba | 146 km, about 1 h 50 | A dhow day in the fjords | October to April | Yes, Oman entry |
| Musandam via Khasab | about 195 km, 2 h 40 | Khor Ash Sham, Telegraph Island | October to April | Yes, Oman entry |
Distances and times come from OSRM routing on OpenStreetMap data, measured without traffic or border queues. From Dubai Marina, add about 20 km to the eastern trips and take about 20 km off the Abu Dhabi run. The cooler months follow the temperature table further down.
Abu Dhabi: the mosque, the palace and the Saadiyat museums
The capital packs three of the UAE’s best-known buildings into one city, a short drive apart. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is about 129 km from Downtown Dubai. Qasr Al Watan is the presidential palace, with halls open to visitors. Louvre Abu Dhabi is on Saadiyat Island, under a dome 180 m wide made of 7,850 stars.

Three timing rules shape the day:
- The mosque opens to visitors from 9 am to 8:30 pm, Saturday to Thursday, with last entry at 8 pm. On Fridays it closes between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm. Visitors must pre-book a free online access pass.
- The Louvre opens from 10 am and is closed on Mondays.
- Dress for the mosque before you leave Dubai. Women need loose clothes to the ankles, sleeves to the wrists and covered hair. Men should avoid shorts and sleeveless shirts.
Yas Island, with its theme parks and the Formula 1 circuit, is 114 km from Downtown Dubai, about 73 minutes without traffic. It sits near Zayed International Airport, so a Yas day can end at the airport for an evening flight. Our Abu Dhabi city tour from Dubai runs the mosque, the palace and the Louvre in one 10-hour day, and can finish at an Abu Dhabi hotel or the airport.
Al Ain and Jebel Hafit: the oasis city on the Oman border
Al Ain is the inland city of Abu Dhabi emirate, 136 km from Downtown Dubai. Its centre is Al Ain Oasis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of about 1,200 hectares and 147,000 date palms. Shaded paths follow the Al Aini and Dawood falaj, channels that have carried mountain water to the palms for about 3,000 years. The Eco-Centre at the oasis is free to enter.

Outside the city, a road climbs Jebel Hafit to 1,249 m, the highest peak in Abu Dhabi emirate. The mountain stands on the border with Oman, and more than 500 ancient tombs sit on its slopes. Time the drive up for the late afternoon, so you reach the top before sunset.
Al Ain and Abu Dhabi also work as a two-day pair from Dubai. The Al Ain city tour covers the oasis, Al Jahili Fort and the Jebel Hafit road from a Dubai pickup.
Sharjah: museums, the old town and a garden island
Sharjah is the closest day out, 26 km from Downtown Dubai, but the drive is the part to plan. The roads between the two cities are busiest at commuting times, so leaving after the morning rush usually saves time.
The old town is the Heart of Sharjah, on Corniche Street in Al Mareija. It is open daily from 10 am to 10 pm and holds restored houses, Souq Al Shanasiyah and the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum. Its Cultural Heritage Tour through the alleys needs booking in advance. The Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization and Al Noor Island, a garden island on Khalid Lagoon, fill the rest of a day. The Sharjah city tour strings the museums, the souq and the island together.
Hatta: the dam, kayaks and mountain trails
Hatta is Dubai’s mountain enclave, 109 km from Downtown on the E44, about 1 hour 25 minutes without traffic. The draw is the dam: a turquoise reservoir between the Hajar Mountains where Hatta Kayak rents kayaks daily from 7 am to 9 pm. A single kayak is for one adult aged 16 or over, up to 110 kg, so send children’s ages before the day.
Hatta stays inside Dubai, and a day at the dam does not pass the Hatta border post into Oman. Carry a passport or Emirates ID all the same, as you would on any long UAE road trip. The Hatta day trip adds Hatta Wadi Hub and the heritage village to the dam, with the car waiting between stops.
Ras Al Khaimah and Jebel Jais: the UAE’s highest mountain road
Jebel Jais is 154 km from Downtown Dubai, about 2 hours without traffic, and 45 minutes from Ras Al Khaimah city. The summit reaches 1,934 m. The road is paved to the top and normal cars drive it, so no 4x4 is needed.

Visit Jebel Jais calls the mountain the coldest place in the UAE: temperatures fall below zero in winter, and fog or rain can cut visibility on the bends. The mountain stays open 24 hours, but the ziplines and restaurants keep fixed hours and can close in extreme weather. Pack a warm jacket from December to February, even when Dubai is mild. The Jebel Jais day trip times the drive for the zipline slot and a stop in Ras Al Khaimah on the way home.
Fujairah and the east coast: snorkelling, forts and Al Bidya Mosque
The east coast faces the Gulf of Oman, and the drive crosses the Hajar Mountains to reach it. Fujairah city is 120 km from Downtown Dubai, about 1 hour 30 minutes without traffic.
Al Bidya Mosque, 35 km north of Fujairah city on the road to Dibba, is the stop most people remember. Fujairah Tourism describes it as the oldest mosque in the UAE: stone and burnt clay, with four domes resting on a single central column. On the same stretch of coast, Snoopy Island sits just off the beach at Al Aqah, with a reef used for snorkelling and kayaking. Fujairah Fort completes the usual loop. The Fujairah east coast tour runs the whole coast in one long day.
Musandam: Dibba or Khasab, and what the border needs
Musandam is the Omani tip of the peninsula, cut off from the rest of Oman by UAE land. Two towns serve as bases for a dhow day:
- Dibba, 146 km from Downtown Dubai, about 1 hour 50 minutes. The Royal Oman Police started operations at the Dibba border crossing on 26 February 2025.
- Khasab, about 195 km away, about 2 hours 40 minutes. The road runs north through Ras Al Khaimah to the Al Darah post, then along the coast in Oman.
Every traveller needs an original passport and the right to enter Oman. The Oman Ministry of Foreign Affairs exempts GCC citizens from visas. Citizens of more than 100 other countries get 14 days without a visa, on conditions: a passport valid for 6 months, a return ticket, a hotel booking, health insurance and enough funds. Some nationalities qualify only if they live in a GCC country or hold a valid visa for the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, a Schengen country or Japan. Re-entering the UAE on a single-entry visit visa is the other trap. Read our Musandam border and visa rules before you book, then see the Musandam day trip for how the dhow day runs.

Closer to Dubai: desert safaris, dhow cruises and seasonal evenings
Not every outing needs a full day. Evening dhow cruises leave from Dubai Marina, Dubai Creek and Dubai Canal, all inside the city. The Lahbab dunes are 48 km from Downtown Dubai, about 43 minutes without traffic, which makes a desert safari a half day rather than a full one. The first choice is the time of day: our guide to morning or evening safaris compares the two. The second is who shares the 4x4, set out in private vs shared desert safaris. The third is packing, covered in what to wear in the dunes.
Two seasonal venues fill an evening or a cool morning:
- Global Village runs Season 31 from 14 October 2026 to May 2027. It opens from 4 pm to midnight, Sunday to Wednesday, and 4 pm to 1 am, Thursday to Saturday. On Tuesdays entry is for ladies and families only, public holidays aside.
- Dubai Miracle Garden in Al Barsha South 3 opens daily from 9 am to 9 pm during its season. It opens for part of each year only, so check the season dates on its official site.
When should you go? The UAE tour calendar in brief
Temperatures below are averages at Dubai International Airport. The open desert runs colder than the coast at night, and Jebel Jais much colder again. Sunset times are for Lahbab on the 15th of each month.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Sunset | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 24.4 °C | 15.3 °C | 5:49 pm | Every trip; a heavy jacket on Jebel Jais |
| February | 26.1 °C | 16.4 °C | 6:12 pm | Every trip |
| March | 28.9 °C | 18.6 °C | 6:26 pm | Every trip; Al Ain before it warms |
| April | 33.7 °C | 22.3 °C | 6:40 pm | Coast and water days |
| May | 38.2 °C | 26.1 °C | 6:55 pm | Early starts, museums |
| June to September | 39.5 to 41.9 °C | 28.0 to 31.5 °C | 6:22 to 7:10 pm | Museums, dawn kayaking, Jebel Jais |
| October | 35.9 °C | 25.4 °C | 5:51 pm | Hatta, Musandam, Global Village opens |
| November | 30.7 °C | 21.1 °C | 5:30 pm | Every trip |
| December | 26.5 °C | 17.4 °C | 5:30 pm | Every trip; the shortest days |
Short winter days matter most on the far trips. In December the sun sets at about 5:30 pm, so a Jebel Jais or Khasab day needs an 8 am start to see the views in daylight.
Private car or shared tour: which suits your group?
A shared coach tour follows a fixed route and collects several hotels before it leaves the city. A private car leaves from your door when you are ready and waits while you are inside each place. That matters most on the long trips, where a hotel loop at each end eats into short winter daylight.
All the trips here run in Assure cars with a chauffeur. A Lexus ES 300h carries 3 guests, a GMC Yukon or Cadillac Escalade 6, and a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 13 or 19. Every trip on this page starts from a Dubai hotel, home or airport, under our RTA licence. Pickups that start in another emirate are on request. Our private tours with your own driver page sets out half days, full days and multi-day plans.
How to plan the day
- Start early on the long trips. Leave by 8 am for Jebel Jais, Khasab or the east coast loop, and by 8:30 am for Abu Dhabi or Al Ain.
- Check the day of the week. The Grand Mosque closes to visitors from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm on Fridays, and the Louvre Abu Dhabi closes on Mondays.
- Book timed entries ahead. That means the mosque access pass and the Heart of Sharjah heritage tour. The Jebel Jais ziplines keep fixed hours, so the drive is planned around your ride.
- Pack for the place, not for Dubai. Bring modest clothes for mosques, a jacket for Jebel Jais in winter, and swimwear and a towel for Snoopy Island or a Musandam dhow.
- Bring the right papers. Carry an original passport for Musandam. For every other trip, bring a passport or Emirates ID.
- Send children’s ages. UAE rules put children under 4 in a child seat, and keep children aged 10 or under, or under 145 cm, out of the front seat. With ages in hand, the right seats come with the car.
- Ask what the quote covers. Salik tolls on the Dubai roads out of the city, parking, entry tickets and lunch vary by trip, so each quote lists them line by line. Our guide to Salik tolls in Dubai explains how the gates charge.
Two sample days
These plans show how the hours fall on two of the trips above. Your chauffeur adjusts them to your pace on the day.
Abu Dhabi, on any day except Monday or Friday
| Time | Stop |
|---|---|
| 8:30 am | Pickup in Downtown Dubai |
| About 10:00 am | Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, with your pre-booked access pass |
| About 12:00 pm | Lunch in the city |
| About 1:30 pm | Qasr Al Watan |
| About 3:30 pm | Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island |
| About 6:00 pm | Leave for Dubai, roughly 1 h 30 without traffic |
Monday rules out the Louvre, and Friday’s midday closure at the mosque pushes it to the afternoon.
Hatta, best from October to April
| Time | Stop |
|---|---|
| 7:00 am | Pickup in Downtown Dubai |
| About 8:30 am | Hatta Dam, with kayaks available from 7 am |
| About 10:30 am | Hatta Wadi Hub |
| About 12:30 pm | Lunch in Hatta |
| About 2:00 pm | The heritage village |
| About 3:30 pm | Leave for Dubai, back by about 5 pm |
The early start puts you on the water well before the midday sun.
Which trip suits which traveller?
- First visit, one day to spare: Abu Dhabi, for the mosque and the Louvre.
- Families with children under 10: Hatta or the Fujairah coast, with short drives between stops and water to play in.
- Couples: a Musandam dhow day from Dibba, or Jebel Jais timed for the late light.
- Culture over scenery: Sharjah’s museums and old town, or Al Ain’s oasis and forts.
- Cooler air in winter: Jebel Jais, where winter temperatures can fall below zero.
- Only half a day free: a desert safari, a Sharjah morning, or a dhow cruise in the city.
