How long is the drive from Dubai to Muscat?
From Downtown Dubai to central Muscat it is about 409 km via Hatta, 4 hours 43 minutes on OSRM’s free-flow estimate. Add the border and a stop for fuel, and the day runs 6 to 7 hours.
| Start | Route | Distance to central Muscat | Without traffic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Dubai | Hatta and Al Wajajah | about 409 km | 4 h 43 min |
| Downtown Dubai | Khatmat Malaha, Kalba coast | about 427 km | 5 h 1 min |
| Sharjah city | Khatmat Malaha | about 413 km | about 4 h 45 min |
| Abu Dhabi city | Mezyad and Hafeet | about 517 km | about 5 h 40 min |
Figures are OSRM on OpenStreetMap road data, measured on 17 October 2026. Downtown Dubai to Muscat International Airport is about 399 km, roughly 4 hours 40 minutes.
Border time is the part nobody can promise. Eid and long weekends push the total past 7 hours, which our border queues on UAE holidays guide lists by date.
Which route: Hatta and Sohar, or Al Ain and Mezyad?
Take Hatta from Dubai. The UAE post is 114 km from Downtown Dubai on the E44, and the Omani post, Al Wajajah, is about 3 km on. From Al Wajajah the road runs down to the Batinah coast. Sohar is about 89 km on, and central Muscat about 292 km.
Mezyad is the better choice from Abu Dhabi or Al Ain. The UAE post is 27 km south of Al Ain centre, and from the Omani post at Hafeet central Muscat is about 334 km. Starting in Al Ain, the Dubai to Al Ain guide shows the road down to it.
Khatmat Malaha suits Fujairah and Kalba starts. The German Embassy listed all three crossings as open around the clock on 2 March 2026. Our guide to every UAE and Oman crossing compares them.
What happens at the border, step by step?
- UAE exit. Every passport is stamped out. The exit fee, per Gulf News, is AED 35.
- The drive between posts. You stay in the vehicle. The German Embassy puts the whole passage at about 3 km.
- Oman immigration. Each passenger shows a passport and an eVisa, a visa from the counter or proof of the 14-day exemption.
- Insurance. A UAE car without Oman cover buys it from a kiosk. Gulf News says Orange Card cover starts at about AED 106 for 5 days.
- Customs. The car and bags may be inspected, then you drive on.
Nobody crosses on foot, because the Oman crossings are for vehicles only. The fees, hours and what to bring are in our Hatta border crossing guide.
UAE residents should check the Oman rules for their profession in the Oman visa guide for UAE residents.
Where to stop on the way: Sohar, Barka and the Batinah coast
The road after Al Wajajah descends to the coast near Sohar, then follows the Batinah plain toward Muscat. Fill the tank in Hatta before you cross, since ENOC and Emarat stations stand about 9 km before the border post. The Omani side has Al Maha and Shell stations just past Al Wajajah.
Sohar is the natural halfway stop. It is 89 km from the border and about 204 km from Downtown Dubai, so the first leg is under 2.5 hours without the border. Barka, the last large town before the capital, sits on the same coast road.
If Sohar is your destination rather than a stop, see Dubai to Sohar. We drive stops on request; tell us on WhatsApp where you would like to break the trip.
Arriving in Muscat: Qurum, Muttrah, Al Mouj and the airport
From the capital’s edge, central Muscat to Muscat International Airport is about 38 km, 34 minutes without traffic. That makes the airport the easiest first stop if you are flying onward from there.

Qurum, Muttrah and Al Mouj lie along the coast between the airport and the old town. Muttrah is the oldest waterfront, with its Corniche and souq. Give us the hotel name and we plan the drop-off.
For a flight out of Muscat on arrival day, build the car ahead of the check-in time, not the boarding time. Our airport transfers page covers the airport side at home.
Muscat to Dubai: the return trip and UAE re-entry
The border order reverses. You clear Omani exit at Al Wajajah, then UAE entry at Hatta. Residents re-enter on their residence visa and Emirates ID. GCC citizens need no UAE visa.

Visitors need care. GDRFA Dubai describes its single-entry tourist visa as a visa for one visit, so leaving ends it. Sort a multiple-entry visa or a new one before you go. Every passport should be valid for 6 months from the day you return.
Oman’s 14-day exemption cannot be extended, so count the days before you book the return car. If flights are disrupted, the road is also a way home; see flights disrupted: travel by road.
Bus, flight or private car: door-to-door time compared
| Option | Time on the road or in the air | What you handle |
|---|---|---|
| Private car | 6 to 7 hours door to door | Passports at two posts; the driver handles the car |
| Coach from Sharjah | about 8 hours on Mwasalat’s timetable | Station at both ends, 23 kg checked bag |
| Flight | Short in the air | Airport transfers and check-in at both ends |
The coach details are in our Dubai to Muscat bus guide. A private car leaves when you decide and stops where you ask. See the private Dubai to Muscat transfer or every Oman city we serve on the Oman transfers page. Assure drives into Oman on request, confirmed per trip, with Oman insurance and papers checked first. Trips that stay in the UAE run as intercity transfers. The rest of the region is under road travel from Dubai.
