When are UAE border queues longest?
The pattern follows the public-holiday calendar. Residents who want a break drive to Oman, and visitors on long weekends join them. Two pinch points:

- Hatta. The UAE post is about 114 km from Downtown Dubai on the E44, 1 h 27 min without traffic. It is the road to Muscat, about 409 km through Al Wajajah.
- Al Ghuwaifat. The UAE post for Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain is 453 km from Downtown Dubai on the E11, about 3 h 58 min.
Busy days are the first morning of a holiday and its last evening. The first morning is outbound, and the last evening is the return into the UAE, when everyone who left must come back through the same post.
We found no official published queue times for either border. Our advice is based on holiday timing, not measured delays. If a source claims a figure, check who measured it and when.
Public holidays for the next 12 months in the UAE, Oman and Saudi Arabia
Today is 17 October 2026. UAE dates below come from the UAE Government portal for the rule and Gulf News for the 2027 projections. Hijri holidays depend on moon sighting.
| Holiday | UAE rule | Date |
|---|---|---|
| National Day (Eid Al Etihad) | 2 and 3 December | Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 December 2026 |
| New Year | 1 January | Friday 1 January 2027 |
| Eid Al Fitr | 1 to 3 Shawwal, plus day 30 of Ramadan if the month has 30 days | Projected 9 to 11 March 2027, or to 12 March |
| Arafah Day | 9 Dhu Al Hijjah | Projected about 15 May 2027 |
| Eid Al Adha | 10 to 12 Dhu Al Hijjah | Projected 16 to 18 May 2027 |
The 2027 Hijri dates are projections, not an official list. The government sometimes moves a weekday holiday next to the weekend, and announces it close to the date. Check the day you plan to cross.
Oman and Saudi Arabia. We could not confirm official holiday dates for either country from a primary source on 17 October 2026. Both governments announce theirs, so look at Oman’s and Saudi Arabia’s official announcements when you plan. Eid dates usually align across the Gulf within a day, but moon sighting can differ. Our UAE public holidays guide keeps the UAE list, and the Eid in Dubai guide explains what Eid means on the ground.
Best times of day to cross Hatta and Ghuwaifat
The simplest rule is to leave before dawn or to travel a day early.

- Before dawn. Leave Dubai at about 4 am for Hatta and you reach the UAE post in the first hours of daylight. Hatta and Al Wajajah were reported open around the clock in March 2026.
- A day early. If a break starts on Thursday, cross on Wednesday. You swap one working day for an empty road.
- Mid-week. Outside holidays, Tuesday to Thursday has no known pattern of heavy queues, but no official data backs that.
- Avoid the last evening. Returning to the UAE on the final night of a break puts you in the biggest queue.
For Ghuwaifat the drive is four hours first, so leaving at 4 am puts you at the border around 8 am. A Saudi, Qatar or Bahrain trip is a full day. The Ghuwaifat and Batha guide and the Hatta border guide go through each post step by step.
Ramadan border hours and fasting on the road
Ramadan 2027 should fall in the month before the projected Eid Al Fitr of about 9 March. We found no official ICP or Royal Oman Police statement of different border hours in Ramadan, so we give none. The German Embassy reported the main posts open around the clock on 2 March 2026, during Ramadan that year.
Three practical points:
- Fasting drivers get tired earlier in the afternoon. Start early so the drive ends before sunset.
- Many roadside cafés and restaurants on the road to Hatta and in the Eastern Province open late or close during daylight in Ramadan. Fill the tank and carry water.
- Officers and staff may work reduced shifts at counters. We would rather confirm status than assume it.
What to do if you are stuck in a border queue
- Keep the papers ready. Passports, visas or eVisas, the car’s registration card and insurance. Gulf News describes the border order for Oman as exit fee, immigration, insurance, then customs.

- Fix the insurance early. If the car has no Oman cover, buying it is a separate stop. Check it before you leave.
- Charge the phone. Your eVisa should be saved on the phone, not only in email.
- Keep fuel and water. Never enter a queue with less than half a tank.
- Ask your driver or contact. On an Assure trip, the driver tells us where the queue stands, and we can adjust your onward booking. The Dubai to Salalah by road guide plans for the long Oman drive, where a late border costs the whole day.
Planning a holiday crossing with a chauffeur
A chauffeur does not shorten a queue, but the driver settles the timing for you. We choose the hour, check the car’s insurance and registration before the date, and confirm each post is running. See the Oman transfers page and the Saudi Arabia page for routes, the intercity transfers for trips that stay inside the UAE, and the cross-border hub for every Gulf route. Road travel from Dubai compares the borders. Holiday weekends book early, so message the dates on WhatsApp.
