Dubai to Manama transfers

Can I drive from Dubai to Bahrain?

Yes. Bahrain is an island state with one road link, the King Fahd Causeway from Saudi Arabia. So the drive from Dubai crosses Saudi Arabia first and reaches Bahrain over the causeway.

Assure takes Bahrain trips on request, confirmed per trip. We check your dates, each passenger’s nationality and the car’s papers before we send a quote. The cross-border transfers page sets Bahrain beside Oman, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Our UAE land border checklist lists what to carry.

The route: across Saudi Arabia, then over the causeway

Stage Road distance Drive time without traffic
Dubai to the Al Ghuwaifat border 453 km about 4 h
Al Ghuwaifat to Manama, via Al Batha, Al Khobar and the causeway 386 km about 4 h 30 min
Dubai to Manama in total 837 km about 8 h 20 min
Abu Dhabi to Manama 738 km about 7 h 25 min

We measured these on OSRM, using OpenStreetMap road data, on 17 October 2026. Border queues and stops are not included.

  1. UAE exit at Al Ghuwaifat. The E11 takes you west from Dubai, past Abu Dhabi, Ruwais and Sila, to the border.
  2. Saudi entry at Al Batha. The German Embassy in Abu Dhabi reported this crossing open around the clock in March 2026. From here you drive north through Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province.
  3. Al Khobar. The causeway starts on the southern side of the Dammam and Al Khobar area. If you want a night or a meeting there first, see our Dubai to Dammam and Al Khobar route.
  4. The causeway. You leave Saudi Arabia and enter Bahrain on Passport Island, then drive on to Al Jasra and Manama.

Starting at Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi cuts the trip to about 729 km.

How long is the King Fahd Causeway, and how does the crossing work?

The causeway is about 25 km long. It links Khobar in Saudi Arabia with Al Jasra in Bahrain and opened in 1986. The King Fahd Causeway Authority, set up jointly by both kingdoms, runs it.

  • Toll. The car pays a crossing toll at the gates. A ticket bought in advance in the authority’s Jesr app lets the car use the E-JESR lane without stopping. The current car toll is published on kfca.sa and in the app, and we check it when we quote.
  • Immigration and customs. Saudi exit and Bahrain entry are both on Passport Island, halfway across.
  • Live crossing time. The authority’s website shows the average time to clear the procedures area in each direction, with a light, medium or heavy traffic level.
  • Opening hours. The authority’s website does not state them. We check the crossing for your date and time when we quote.
  • Stops. The causeway has cafes and restaurants, and parking there is free for the first 15 minutes.
  • Help on the day. The authority’s customer experience centre is on 800 4000 999.

Which visas do you need for Saudi Arabia and Bahrain?

You clear Saudi entry at Al Batha about 4 hours after leaving Dubai, then Bahrain entry on the causeway. Each passenger needs to be cleared for both.

Saudi Arabia, crossed on the way

  • ksavisa.sa is Saudi Arabia’s unified visa platform. It lists a tourism visa and a separate transit category, and checks your nationality first.
  • A UAE residency with at least three months left also makes you eligible for the tourism visa, as long as your profession appears on the list at visitsaudi.com. That condition comes from Saudi Arabia’s Tourist Visa Regulations.
  • A used US, UK or Schengen visa, or US, UK or EU permanent residency, opens the same visa to other visitors.
  • Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from the day you apply.

Our Saudi Arabia by road page goes through the Saudi rules in full. GCC road trip visas compares the entry rules by country.

Bahrain

  • The NPRA runs Bahrain’s eVisa portal, evisa.gov.bh. It publishes two lists: nationalities that can apply online, and nationalities eligible for a visa on arrival.
  • Click your nationality on either list to see its conditions. The lists go by passport country, so UAE residents look up their own nationality.
  • If your nationality is on neither list, the visa needs a guarantor in Bahrain: a hotel, a Bahraini travel agent, a company or a citizen.
  • The portal takes card payments. Its help desk answers Sunday to Thursday, 7am to 2pm Bahrain time.

The way back. GDRFA Dubai describes its single-entry tourist visa as a visa for a single visit, so it does not cover a second arrival. Visitors who plan to drive back to the UAE need a visa that lets them in again. Cross-border chauffeur cost explains how return trips are priced.

What the car needs for two borders and the causeway

For a Bahrain booking we confirm these points per trip, before we quote:

  1. The car’s UAE registration card, plus the owner’s written consent (NOC) to take it abroad.
  2. Insurance cover for the Saudi transit.
  3. Insurance cover for Bahrain. The Jesr app sells and extends this before departure, with several lengths of cover.
  4. Permission for the car to carry paying passengers into Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

If one of these is not in place for your dates, you hear it from us before the booking is confirmed.

Road or a short flight: which makes sense?

For most solo travellers the flight is quicker. More than 8 hours of driving, plus two borders, is a full day.

The road wins in a few cases:

  • Families and groups with heavy bags. A Mercedes-Benz V-Class carries 6 passengers and 4 large cases. See our vans and people carriers.
  • A stop in Saudi Arabia. A night or a meeting in Al Khobar or Dammam fits on the way.
  • The car in Bahrain. The driver stays with you for meetings, the Formula 1 weekend in Sakhir or the drive back.
  • Flights cancelled or full. Our guide to travelling by road when flights are disrupted covers that case.

Few people drive this route, and we say so plainly. We take it when the road fits the trip better than the flight.

Arriving in Manama: hotels in Seef, Juffair and Bahrain Bay, and the circuit

The causeway reaches Bahrain at Al Jasra on the west coast. Manama sits on the north-east corner of the main island.

  • Seef: the mall and hotel district on the north coast, west of the old centre.
  • Bahrain Bay: the waterfront development on the north edge of the city.
  • Juffair: south-east of the centre, with apartment hotels and restaurants.
  • Bahrain International Circuit: in the Sakhir desert, south of Manama.
  • Bahrain International Airport: on Muharraq island, across the bridges from Manama.

For hotel and address pickups in both directions, see the Dubai to Manama transfer page.

What sets the price of a Bahrain trip

Every Bahrain quote goes out on WhatsApp. These change it:

  • Return leg. A one-way trip still has the car drive about 837 km back to Dubai.
  • Days in Bahrain. The car waiting in Manama, and the driver’s hotel nights.
  • The causeway toll each way, at the authority’s current rate.
  • Insurance for Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
  • A second driver for a same-day return.
  • The vehicle: saloon, SUV or van.

Questions and answers

How long is the King Fahd Causeway?

About 25 km. It runs from Khobar in Saudi Arabia to Al Jasra on the west coast of Bahrain, and it opened in 1986. Saudi exit and Bahrain entry are both on Passport Island, the artificial island in the middle. You clear both there, then drive on into Bahrain.

Can I drive from Dubai to Bahrain?

Yes, through Saudi Arabia. The UAE has no land border with Bahrain, which is an island state. You exit the UAE at Al Ghuwaifat, enter Saudi Arabia at Al Batha, drive north through the Eastern Province to Al Khobar and cross the King Fahd Causeway. Assure takes Bahrain trips on request and confirms each one before quoting.

How far is Bahrain from Dubai by road?

Dubai to Manama is about 837 km, roughly 8 h 20 min of driving without traffic. Abu Dhabi to Manama is about 738 km, or 7 h 25 min. The UAE leg to Al Ghuwaifat is 453 km. The Saudi leg from the border to Manama, causeway included, is 386 km. Border queues come on top of these times.

Which visas do you need for Saudi Arabia and Bahrain?

One for each country, unless you are exempt. For Saudi Arabia, the platform ksavisa.sa lists a tourism visa and a transit category. UAE residents qualify with at least three months left on their residency, in a profession listed on visitsaudi.com. For Bahrain, the NPRA portal evisa.gov.bh lists the nationalities that can apply online or on arrival. Apply for both before the trip.

Road or a short flight: which makes sense?

For one or two people with light bags, flying is quicker than 8 h 20 min of driving plus borders. The road suits a family or group with heavy luggage, or a trip with a stop in Al Khobar or Dammam. It also suits travellers who want the car and driver in Bahrain. Tell us the plan and we say which fits.

How do you pay the King Fahd Causeway toll?

At the toll gates on the causeway, or in advance in the King Fahd Causeway Authority's Jesr app. A ticket bought in the app lets the car use the E-JESR lane through the gates without stopping. The authority publishes the current car toll on kfca.sa and in the app, so we check it when we quote.

Can I see how busy the causeway is before we get there?

Yes. The King Fahd Causeway Authority's website shows the average time to clear the procedures area, one figure towards Bahrain and one towards Saudi Arabia, with a traffic level. The Jesr app carries the same service. We check it on the drive north from Al Batha and plan any stop around it.
