Dubai to Doha transfersCan you drive from the UAE to Qatar?
Yes, but not directly. The UAE and Qatar share no land border, so the road runs through Saudi Arabia. You cross two borders and stop at four posts: Al Ghuwaifat (UAE exit), Al Batha (Saudi entry), Salwa (Saudi exit) and Abu Samra (Qatar entry).
The Salwa and Abu Samra crossing was shut on 5 June 2017 and reopened in 2021.
Few travellers drive this route, and most fly between Dubai and Doha. The road makes sense when a group’s luggage outgrows an airline allowance, or when you want the same car and chauffeur waiting in Qatar.
Assure drives Qatar trips on request, confirmed per trip. Before we quote, we check the date, every passenger’s nationality and documents, and the car’s papers for both countries. Our cross-border transfers from the UAE page compares this route with Oman, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. The UAE land border checklist lists what to carry.

In the UAE, the drive follows the E11 west past Abu Dhabi, Ruwais and Sila to Al Ghuwaifat. After Al Batha you drive through Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province to Salwa. The Salwa and Abu Samra posts are more than 8 km apart, and Doha is about 90 km north-east of Abu Samra. See Ghuwaifat and Al Batha border crossing.

Starting in the capital saves about 100 km. A pickup at Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi is about 587 km from Doha.
Which visas do you need for Saudi Arabia and Qatar?
Each passenger needs entry rights for both countries. Sort the Saudi part first, because you reach Al Batha before Abu Samra. GCC road trip visas compares the rules.
Saudi Arabia (transit on the way to Qatar)
- Saudi Arabia’s unified visa platform, ksavisa.sa, lists a tourism visa and a separate transit category.
- Eligibility starts with your nationality, which the platform checks first.
- UAE residents also qualify for the tourism visa when their GCC residency is valid for at least three months. Saudi Arabia’s Tourist Visa Regulations add a condition: the resident’s profession must be on the list published at visitsaudi.com.
- So do visitors who hold a US, UK or Schengen visa they have used at least once, or US, UK or EU permanent residency.
- The passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you apply. The tourism application includes a medical insurance step.
Our page on driving into Saudi Arabia from the UAE covers the Saudi side in more detail.
Qatar
- GCC nationals enter without a visa, on a passport or GCC ID.
- 102 nationalities can enter Qatar visa-free.
- If your nationality is not on that list, UAE residents and residents of the other GCC countries apply for the A2 GCC Resident visa on the Hayya platform.
- Other travellers apply for a Hayya e-visa before travel.
Coming back to the UAE. GDRFA Dubai issues its single-entry tourist visa for a single visit, so leaving by road ends it. If you are visiting the UAE and plan to return by car, check that your visa allows another entry before you book the return leg.
What the car needs at four border posts
A car with UAE plates crosses two foreign countries on this route, so its paperwork is checked twice. For every Qatar booking we confirm these points before we quote:
- Its UAE registration card (mulkiya), with a no-objection letter (NOC) from the owner for travel abroad.
- Motor insurance valid in Saudi Arabia for the transit, and in Qatar for the stay.
- Pre-registration of the vehicle on Hayya for Abu Samra. Qatar Tourism lists this service on its visa page.
- Permission for the car to carry paying passengers on this route, on both sides of each border.
If any point cannot be confirmed for your date, we tell you before you confirm the booking.
How long do the borders take, and when should you leave?
No post on this route publishes a fixed waiting time. Plan for queues at all four.
Opening hours are only partly on record. The German Embassy in Abu Dhabi reported the Al Batha crossing open around the clock in March 2026. Visit Qatar and Hayya publish no hours for Abu Samra, and we hold no official figure for Salwa. We confirm both posts for your date and start time before we quote.
- Leave early. A 6am start from Dubai reaches Al Ghuwaifat at around 10am. Ruwais and Sila are the last towns on the E11 before the border.
- Check the calendar. If your dates are flexible, ask us whether they fall on a public holiday weekend in the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Qatar.
- Keep documents in reach. Your chauffeur tells you before each post which passport, visa printout or Hayya approval to have ready.
Arriving in Doha: hotels in West Bay, The Pearl and Lusail, and the airport
The road from Abu Samra enters Doha from the south-west. From there the chauffeur drives to any address in the city.
- West Bay: the tower district on the north side of the corniche, with many of the large hotels.
- The Pearl: the island district north of West Bay, with apartments, hotels and a marina.
- Lusail: further north. Lusail International Circuit hosts the F1 Qatar Grand Prix on 27 to 29 November 2026.
- Hamad International Airport (DOH): on the east side of the city, for travellers flying on from Doha.

Which car suits a 700 km drive?
Six to seven hours on the road needs space for people and bags.
| Car | Passengers | Large cases | Cabin bags |
|---|---|---|---|
| GMC Yukon | 6 | 3 | 2 |
| Cadillac Escalade | 6 | 3 | 2 |
| Mercedes-Benz V-Class | 6 | 4 | 2 |
| Mercedes-Benz S-Class | 3 | 2 | 2 |

What sets the price of a Qatar trip
We quote every cross-border trip on WhatsApp. These are the factors that change it:
- One way or return. A one-way trip includes the empty drive of about 695 km back to Dubai.
- Waiting in Doha. Days the car stays in Qatar, and the driver’s overnight stay.
- Border fees on the way out and back.
- Insurance for the car in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
- A second driver for a same-day return or a long day of driving.
- The vehicle class: saloon, SUV or van.

Questions and answers
Can you drive from the UAE to Qatar?
Yes, but only through Saudi Arabia, because the UAE and Qatar share no land border. You exit the UAE at Al Ghuwaifat, enter Saudi Arabia at Al Batha, exit at Salwa and enter Qatar at Abu Samra. Every passenger needs entry rights for both Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Assure takes Qatar trips on request and confirms each one before quoting.
Do I need a Saudi visa to drive to Qatar?
In most cases, yes, because the road crosses Saudi Arabia before it reaches Abu Samra. Saudi Arabia's visa platform, ksavisa.sa, lists a tourism visa and a separate transit category. UAE residents can use the tourism route with at least three months left on their residency, if their profession is on the list at visitsaudi.com. Check your nationality there, or send it to us with your dates.
Can you drive from Dubai to Qatar in one day?
Yes. Dubai to Doha is about 695 km, roughly 6 h 40 min of driving without traffic, plus the time at four border posts. A dawn start from Dubai reaches Al Ghuwaifat after about 4 hours. About 2 h 45 min of driving remains after the UAE exit. You reach Doha in the afternoon or evening, depending on the queues at Al Batha, Salwa and Abu Samra.
Which visas do you need for Saudi Arabia and Qatar?
Two sets of entry rights. For Saudi Arabia, check ksavisa.sa: UAE residents with at least three months left on their residency, in a profession listed on visitsaudi.com, can apply for the tourism visa. For Qatar, 102 nationalities enter visa-free, GCC nationals need only a passport or GCC ID, and UAE residents of other nationalities apply for the Hayya A2 visa.
How long do the borders take, and when should you leave?
No border post on this route publishes a fixed waiting time, so plan for queues at all four. Leave Dubai early: at about 4 hours to Al Ghuwaifat, a 6am start puts you at the UAE exit around 10am. If your dates fall on a public holiday weekend in the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Qatar, allow extra time. Your chauffeur tells you before each post which documents to have ready.
Can I start the trip in Abu Dhabi instead of Dubai?
Yes. Abu Dhabi to Doha is about 596 km, roughly 5 h 40 min without traffic, so starting in the capital saves about 100 km. Pickups at Zayed International Airport (AUH) work too: AUH to Doha is about 587 km. The border posts, visas and car papers are the same as from Dubai.
Can the driver wait in Doha and bring me back?
Yes, on request. With the car waiting in Doha, you avoid paying for it to drive about 695 km back to Dubai empty and out again. Waiting days, the driver's overnight stay and the border fees on the way back are all priced into one quote, which we send on WhatsApp.
