Two roads from Dubai to Muscat

There are two sensible ways to drive from Dubai to Muscat, and they cross into Oman at different posts.

Route UAE and Oman border posts Distance Drive time without traffic
Inland, via Hatta Hatta (UAE), then Al Wajajah (Oman) about 410 km about 4 h 45 min
Coastal, via Kalba Khatmat Malaha, south of Kalba about 435 km about 5 h 15 min

We measured both on OSRM (OpenStreetMap road data) on 17 October 2026, from Downtown Dubai to central Muscat. The times leave out traffic, fuel stops and the queue at each post.

The inland route leaves Dubai on the E44 through Al Awir and Al Madam. Hatta is about 110 km and 1 hour 25 minutes from Downtown. After the Omani post at Al Wajajah the road drops through the mountains to the Batinah coast. It joins the coast road about 60 km north of Sohar.

The coastal route takes Emirates Road and Maliha Road to the E84, crosses the Hajar Mountains to Fujairah, then runs south through Kalba to Khatmat Malaha. Both routes then share the last 265 km or so south through Sohar, Al Khaburah, Barka and Seeb. Your chauffeur picks between the old coast highway and the Batinah Expressway on the day.

How long the whole trip takes

Plan on the 4 hours 45 minutes of driving, plus two border posts on the way out. Time at each post depends on the queue on the day, so build in a margin. For a morning meeting in Muscat, that means leaving Dubai before dawn. The Hatta road and passport rules guide helps with the inland route.

A same-day return is about 820 km of driving and four border posts in total. That is a long day for one chauffeur, so ask about a second driver or a night in Muscat before you book.

The Hatta and Al Wajajah crossing, step by step

On the Hatta route, the crossing usually runs in this order:

  1. UAE exit at Hatta. Officers check every passport and stamp you out of the UAE. The chauffeur shows the car’s papers.
  2. On to Al Wajajah. You stay in the car for the drive to the Omani post.
  3. Oman immigration. Each passenger shows a passport plus an Oman visa or proof of visa-free entry.
  4. Insurance and customs. The car’s Oman insurance is checked, and customs may inspect the car and the bags.

On the way back, you clear Omani exit at Al Wajajah and UAE entry at Hatta. The Hatta border crossing guide goes through each post in more detail.

Opening hours, and who may cross at Hatta

On 2 March 2026 the German Embassy in the UAE reported Hatta and Al Wajajah open around the clock. It listed Khatmat Malaha as open around the clock too. We have no later official statement, so if you plan to cross late at night or on an Eid holiday, ask us to check the post for your date.

The crossing is by vehicle only, not on foot. It is not limited to GCC passports: the embassy named it as a road route into Oman for German citizens. What decides your entry is your passport and your Oman visa, covered below. The embassy said visas on arrival are issued at the border, but advised applying for an eVisa first.

Documents each passenger needs

Every passenger carries their own passport. Beyond that, the rule depends on nationality:

  • GCC citizens need no visa for Oman.
  • Visa-free visitors. The Oman Ministry of Foreign Affairs exempts citizens of more than 100 countries for stays of up to 14 days. They need a passport valid for 6 months, a return ticket, a confirmed hotel booking, health insurance and enough money for the stay. A second group of nationalities also needs GCC residence or a valid visa for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan or a Schengen country.
  • UAE residents who are not GCC citizens. Don’t assume you can cross on your Emirates ID. A Royal Oman Police spokesman has said GCC residents still need a visa, and the rule turns on nationality and profession.
  • Everyone else applies on the Royal Oman Police eVisa portal before the trip.

Coming back, UAE residents re-enter on their residence visa and Emirates ID. GDRFA Dubai describes its single-entry tourist visa as a visa for one visit, so leaving at Hatta ends it. If you are on one, arrange a multiple-entry visa or a new visa before you leave. Our guide to which UAE and Oman crossings visitors can use covers the other posts. Oman visa for UAE residents covers residents.

What the car needs to cross into Oman

A UAE-registered car needs motor insurance that is valid in Oman. Some UAE policies carry an Oman extension, and third-party cover can also be bought at the border. The chauffeur carries the vehicle registration card. If the chauffeur is not the registered owner, the car also needs a notarised no-objection certificate (NOC) from the owner. Use the UAE land border checklist before you travel.

Carrying paying passengers across the border also needs the right transport permits on both sides. That is why this route is on request: before we quote, we confirm the vehicle, its Oman papers and the permits for your trip. None of this paperwork is yours to arrange.

Where we drop off in Muscat

Muscat is a long city: Muttrah Corniche is about 34 km past the airport. Give the exact address when you ask for a quote. Common drop-offs:

  • Muscat International Airport. About 400 km from Downtown Dubai via Hatta, around 4 hours 40 minutes without traffic.
  • Al Mouj and the Seeb hotels, on the airport side of the city.
  • Qurum and Shatti Al Qurum, for the beach hotels and the Royal Opera House area.
  • Muttrah Corniche and Old Muscat, at the eastern end, about 430 km and 5 hours from Downtown Dubai without traffic.

For a return trip, the chauffeur either waits in Muscat or comes back for you on a set date. Both are priced in the quote.

Choosing a car for a 410 km drive

These cars come from Assure’s own fleet. Larger groups can be split across two cars.

Car Passengers Large bags Suits
GMC Yukon 6 3 Families, mixed luggage
Cadillac Escalade 6 3 Executives, families
Mercedes V-Class 6 4 Groups with more bags, facing seats
Mercedes S-Class 3 2 A couple or a single executive
Mercedes Sprinter 13 6 Teams and family groups

On a drive this long, one of our large SUVs gives a family more legroom and a higher seat for the mountain section.

Questions and answers

How long is the drive from Dubai to Muscat?

About 410 km from Downtown Dubai to central Muscat through the Hatta and Al Wajajah border, which OSRM puts at 4 hours 45 minutes without traffic. Add the time spent at the UAE exit post and the Omani entry post, which depends on the queue. The coastal road through Khatmat Malaha is about 435 km and 5 hours 15 minutes.

How much is a private transfer from Dubai to Muscat?

The fare is quoted per trip on WhatsApp, because a few things move it a lot. A one-way trip still has a 410 km empty drive back for the car. Waiting in Muscat, an overnight stop, a second driver for a same-day return and the vehicle size all change the quote, as do visa, border and insurance costs.

Which border crossing to Muscat is faster?

Hatta and Al Wajajah is usually the quicker choice from Dubai. On OSRM figures it is about 25 km shorter than the coastal crossing at Khatmat Malaha and around 35 minutes faster without traffic. The coastal road suits pickups on the east coast, such as Fujairah, Kalba or Khor Fakkan, where Khatmat Malaha is the nearer post.

Do I need a visa for Oman by road?

It depends on your passport. GCC citizens need no visa. Oman exempts citizens of more than 100 countries for stays of up to 14 days, with a return ticket, hotel booking and health insurance. A Royal Oman Police spokesman has said GCC residents who are not GCC citizens still need a visa. Check your case on the ROP eVisa portal.

Can you pick me up in Muscat for the drive back to Dubai?

The simplest case is the return half of a Dubai booking, where the same car and chauffeur bring you back. A one-way pickup in Oman depends on the permits for carrying passengers there, so we confirm it per trip before quoting. Send the Muscat address, the date and the time on WhatsApp.

Which car is best for the Dubai to Muscat drive?

For up to 6 passengers, the GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade seat 6 with 3 large bags, and the Mercedes V-Class seats 6 with 4. A couple travelling light can take the Mercedes S-Class, with room for 3 passengers and 2 bags. Groups of up to 13 fit in the Mercedes Sprinter, which carries 6 large bags.

Can I stop in Sohar on the way to Muscat?

Yes. Sohar sits on the coast road about 205 km from Dubai, close to the halfway point, so it suits a coffee stop, a meeting or a night's break. Ask for the stop when you book, because waiting time and any overnight stay are part of the quote. The drive on from Sohar to central Muscat is about 206 km.
