Book this rideHow long is the drive from Dubai to Doha?
The drive from Dubai to Doha by road takes about 6 hours 40 minutes without traffic, for roughly 695 km between Downtown Dubai and central Doha. The figures come from OSRM (OpenStreetMap), measured on 17 October 2026. Two border crossings sit on top of that, so the trip fills most of a day.
| Stage | Road distance | Driving time without traffic |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Dubai to Ghuwaifat (UAE exit) | 453 km | 3 h 58 min |
| Ghuwaifat to Abu Samra (Qatar entry), through Saudi Arabia | 148 km | 1 h 44 min |
| Abu Samra to central Doha | 96 km | 1 h 03 min |
| Downtown Dubai to central Doha in total | 695 km | 6 h 38 min |
Each stage was measured on its own, so the three stages add up to a few kilometres more than the end-to-end figure.
Why the road to Doha goes through Saudi Arabia
Qatar’s only land border is with Saudi Arabia, and the UAE and Qatar do not touch. The Saudi part of the trip is short: about 150 km of Highway 95 between Al Batha and Salwa, under 2 hours at the wheel. Every passenger still needs Saudi entry for it.

At the Salwa junction your driver turns east, crosses out of Saudi Arabia at Salwa and into Qatar at Abu Samra. From Abu Samra, Salwa Road runs 96 km north-east into Doha. If your plans include the Eastern Province, the Dubai to Dammam and Al Khobar route shares the same road as far as that junction. The Salwa and Abu Samra border crossing guide describes the second crossing.
The four border posts, in order
- Ghuwaifat: UAE exit, at the western end of the E11 in Al Dhafra, 453 km from Downtown Dubai.
- Al Batha: Saudi entry, just past Ghuwaifat.
- Salwa: Saudi exit, roughly 150 km further on.
- Abu Samra: Qatar entry, 96 km from central Doha.
None of the four posts lists opening hours on an official page we could find. On the day before departure, ask us whether all four are running normally.
Saudi entry for a drive through to Qatar
Saudi visas are handled on the KSA Visa platform. It sorts visas into categories that include visit and transit, and it checks eligibility by nationality. Which option suits a drive through to Doha depends on each passport.
Even for a leg this short, the platform asks for a passport with six months or more of validity from arrival. Other Saudi cities and border posts are on the UAE to Saudi Arabia page. Saudi visa for UAE residents covers the application.
Qatar entry: GCC citizens, UAE residents and visitors
Visit Qatar says citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the UAE need no visa for Qatar. Other travellers use Hayya, Qatar’s visa platform. It issues the Tourist Visa (A1) and the GCC Resident Visa (A2), the one built for people who live in a GCC country.
Visit Qatar describes visa on arrival as an airport process, with a QAR 100 fee. If you are arriving by car at Abu Samra, apply on Hayya before the trip. Visa-free passports need at least three months of validity from arrival, and some nationalities also need a confirmed hotel booking.
For both borders and the Qatar rules on one page, see UAE to Qatar by road. Qatar and Bahrain visas for UAE residents adds the Qatar side.
Leaving the UAE and driving back in
Ghuwaifat works both ways, so a return booking brings you back into the UAE at the same post. UAE residents need a residence visa that is still valid on the day of the drive home. On a UAE visit visa, check before booking that it allows another entry. If it does not, a one-way drive with a flight home from Hamad International may suit you better. See Ghuwaifat and Al Batha border crossing.
The car at Abu Samra
According to Visit Qatar, Hayya also takes vehicle pre-registration for the Abu Samra border. Before a Doha trip is confirmed, we check five things for the car:
- a motor policy valid in Saudi Arabia and in Qatar on your travel dates
- the Mulkiya, the car’s UAE registration card, on board
- a no-objection letter from the car’s registered owner
- the car’s Hayya pre-registration for Abu Samra
- approval to carry paying passengers through Saudi Arabia into Qatar
A Doha booking is only confirmed once all five are in place.
Where in Doha you can be dropped
| Drop-off | Road distance from Downtown Dubai | Driving time without traffic |
|---|---|---|
| Central Doha | 695 km | 6 h 38 min |
| West Bay | 702 km | 6 h 45 min |
| Hamad International Airport (DOH) | 707 km | 6 h 51 min |
| The Pearl | 709 km | 6 h 52 min |
| Lusail | 714 km | 6 h 58 min |
Hamad International is 15 km from central Doha, so a drive-and-fly plan works: your driver drops you at departures and turns for home. Lusail is 21 km north of the centre, about 23 minutes without traffic.
Starting from Abu Dhabi or Al Ain
Abu Dhabi is on the way west, so a pickup there saves about 100 km. Abu Dhabi to Doha is 596 km, about 5 hours 42 minutes without traffic, and Al Ain to Doha is 696 km, about 6 hours 32 minutes. Guests landing at Zayed International can be met in arrivals with a name board and driven straight on. See airport pickups at Zayed International.
Which car for a two-border day
Four border posts mean several stops with bags in and out, so luggage space matters. The GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade from the Assure fleet seat 6 with 3 large suitcases. For a family or a team with more bags, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class seats 6 with 4. The V-Class and the other people carriers are listed on our vans page.
What sets the price of a Doha trip
- One way or return: a one-way drop still pays for the car’s 695 km drive back through both borders.
- Insurance for Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and the car’s border costs.
- A night in Doha for the driver, or a second driver for a same-day return.
- The drop-off: central Doha, West Bay, The Pearl, Lusail or Hamad International.
- The vehicle class.
Dubai to Doha is available on request and confirmed per trip. Message the date, pickup, Doha address and each passenger’s nationality and residency on WhatsApp for a quote. Questions and answers
How long is the drive from Dubai to Doha?
About 6 hours 40 minutes of driving without traffic, for roughly 695 km from Downtown Dubai to central Doha, measured on OSRM (OpenStreetMap) in October 2026. Four border posts come on top: Ghuwaifat, Al Batha, Salwa and Abu Samra. Waits at each one vary, so treat the trip as a full day and set off from Dubai in the morning.
Can you drive from the UAE to Qatar without going through Saudi Arabia?
No. Qatar's only land border is with Saudi Arabia. The road from Dubai leaves the UAE at Ghuwaifat, runs about 150 km through Saudi Arabia on Highway 95 and enters Qatar at Abu Samra. Every passenger needs Saudi entry for that short leg as well as Qatar entry, even though the Saudi section takes under 2 hours to drive.
Do I need a Saudi visa to drive to Doha?
Each passenger needs Saudi entry for the transit leg. The KSA Visa platform lists visit and transit categories, checks eligibility by nationality and asks for a passport valid for six months from arrival. Send us every passenger's nationality and country of residence, and we check which Saudi option applies before the Doha trip is quoted.
Do UAE residents need a visa for Qatar?
It depends on nationality. Citizens of the UAE and the other GCC states need no visa for Qatar, according to Visit Qatar. Other UAE residents can apply for the GCC Resident Visa (A2) on the Hayya platform before travel. Some passports enter visa-free, and those need at least three months of validity from the date of arrival.
Can you drop me at Hamad International Airport?
Yes. Hamad International (DOH) is about 707 km from Downtown Dubai, roughly 6 hours 51 minutes without traffic, and 15 km from central Doha. Give your flight time when you book, so the departure from Dubai leaves room for four border posts and airport check-in. Your driver drops you at departures before heading back to the UAE.
Does the car need anything to enter Qatar at Abu Samra?
Qatar's Hayya platform takes vehicle pre-registration for the Abu Samra border, according to Visit Qatar. We also check the car's insurance for Saudi Arabia and Qatar, its UAE registration card, the owner's no-objection letter and permission to carry paying passengers across both borders. A Doha trip is confirmed only when all of these are in place.
Can I go from Dubai to Doha and back in one day?
On paper, yes, but it is long: about 1,390 km and over 13 hours of driving without traffic, plus four border posts in each direction. For a return the same day, ask for a second driver. The other choice is a night in Doha for the driver, with the drive back the next morning, which suits a two-day business visit.
