How far is Salalah from Dubai, and how long does it take?
Salalah is in Dhofar, in the far south of Oman, and the trip is among the longest road journeys from Dubai. From Downtown Dubai it is about 1,223 km via the Mezyad and Hafeet crossing, around 14 hours of driving on OSRM’s free-flow estimate.
| Leg | Distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Dubai to Mezyad | about 161 km | about 2 h |
| Downtown Dubai to Nizwa | about 421 km | about 5 h |
| Downtown Dubai to Salalah | about 1,223 km | about 14 h |
| Salalah to central Muscat | about 1,045 km | about 11 h 40 min |
Figures are OSRM on OpenStreetMap road data, measured on 17 October 2026, and exclude both border posts. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain starts save the first leg from Dubai.
Which route through Oman’s interior is best?
Take the Mezyad road. Gulf News names the E40 out of Al Ain to the Mezyad post as the crossing for southern Oman and Salalah. The UAE post is south of Al Ain, 27 km from the city centre. The German Embassy listed Mezyad and Hafeet as open around the clock on 2 March 2026.

Past Hafeet, the road heads to Nizwa, then south through the interior to Dhofar. Our guide to every UAE and Oman crossing compares Mezyad with Hatta and the coast. Starting in Al Ain, read the Dubai to Al Ain guide first.
The alternative is up through Muscat. It adds distance from Dubai, since Muscat is 409 km away and Salalah another 1,045 km, so it only makes sense if Muscat is a planned stop. The Muscat leg is in our Dubai to Muscat by road guide.
Where to stop overnight and refuel
Nizwa, at 421 km from Dubai, is the usual first night. You arrive after about 5 hours of driving plus the border, with time for dinner and hotels in town. Day two is then roughly 800 km, about 9 hours of driving.

A longer first day moves the night further south, which shortens the second. That means driving the empty interior stretches in the afternoon and dusk.
We could not confirm fuel station spacing on the southern highway or what services exist at the small stops. So fill up whenever you pass a station, keep the tank above half, and confirm with us which stops are open on your date. Do not count on a station being open at night.
When is the khareef season, and how busy is the road?
Khareef is the south-west monsoon. Wikipedia gives roughly June to early September for Dhofar, and Gulf News says June to September. Hills around Salalah turn green, temperatures drop and visitors arrive from across the Gulf.
We found no official Omani tourism dates for 2026. Check the Oman Ministry of Heritage and Tourism before fixing a date. Salalah’s annual Khareef festival draws the crowds.
Plan for traffic and booked rooms in the weeks around UAE school holidays and public holidays. Our guide to border queues on UAE holidays lists the dates when Mezyad and the other posts fill up. Mist in the hills cuts visibility, so allow longer on the final run into Salalah.
Staying safe on a 14-hour road: fatigue, camels and night driving
The risks are ordinary but serious over this distance.
- Fatigue. Stop every 2 hours. A single driver on 14 hours is a poor plan.
- Animals. Camels and goats cross roads in the interior. Hitting one is a heavy impact.
- Night. Avoid the empty stretches after dark.
- Mist. In khareef, visibility falls in the hills above the coast.
- Paperwork. Every passenger needs Oman entry rights, and the car needs Oman insurance and its registration papers.
An Assure chauffeur plans the day around daylight on the long legs. Our guide to cars for long drives compares seats and luggage space for two days on the road. UAE residents should check the Oman visa rules for UAE residents first.
Bus or flight to Salalah instead?
Gulf News reported Dubai to Salalah bus packages taking around 18 hours in 2023, at about AED 1,000 for two nights and three days, with a 10 kg luggage limit. We found no current published timetable for a scheduled coach, so confirm with a travel agent. Our Dubai to Muscat bus guide covers the coaches that do run.
A flight is quicker in the air but needs airport time at both ends and a transfer in Salalah. We have not confirmed current flight times, so check with the airlines. The car wins if you carry luggage, travel as a family or want to see Oman on the way.
Booking a chauffeur for a two-day Salalah road trip
Assure drives into Oman on request, confirmed per trip. We check Oman insurance, the registration papers and permission to carry passengers across the border before you pay. Partner vehicles are another route, depending on what is free for your dates.
Tell us on WhatsApp the pickup, the dates, where you want the night stop, and how many of you are travelling with how many bags. We reply with a quote.
