Overnight desert safari in Dubai: what happens, what to pack and who it suits

An overnight desert safari from Dubai follows the evening safari until dinner, then you sleep at a desert camp and drive back after breakfast. Downtown Dubai to the Lahbab desert is 48 km, about 45 minutes. In mid-December the sun sets at about 5:31 pm and rises at 6:53 am, and nights are cold.

What is an overnight desert safari?

It is the evening desert safari with the drive home cut out. You are collected in the afternoon, spend the sunset and dinner at a desert camp, sleep there, and are driven back to Dubai after breakfast. Platinum Heritage, one Dubai operator, sells it as an overnight add-on with a “Stone Dwelling Room”. Not every camp offers it, so your quote names the camp.

Assure provides the private car for the road legs. The camp itself comes from our partner network, subject to availability. The standard evening trip is on our desert safari page, and the overnight version is on the overnight desert safari page.

The timeline, hour by hour

  1. Mid-afternoon: pickup at your hotel or home. Downtown Dubai to the Lahbab desert is 48 km, about 45 minutes without traffic. Dubai Marina is about 63 km.
  2. Before sunset: some packages include a dune drive in the camp’s 4x4. Road cars stay on tarmac.
  3. Sunset: about 5:31 pm in mid-November and mid-December, 5:50 pm in mid-January and 6:12 pm in mid-February.
  4. Evening: dinner and the camp programme from your quote.
  5. Night: sleep in the tent or room your quote confirms.
  6. Sunrise: about 6:53 am in mid-December, 7:03 am in mid-January.
  7. After breakfast: your driver returns at the agreed time.

December gives the longest night, about 13 hours 20 minutes from sunset to sunrise. Our morning vs evening desert safari guide compares the day-trip options if you doubt a full night.

Camp type, toilets and air conditioning

Camps differ more on the overnight part than on the evening. Settle these before you pay:

Question Why it matters
Tent or room Private for your group, or shared with other guests
Bathrooms Your own, or a shared block across the camp
Heating or cooling Varies by tent or room type
Bedding Winter nights are cold, so ask what the camp provides
Breakfast Whether it is included and what time it is served

We do not state a camp’s facilities until your quote names it.

How cold does it get? Temperatures by month

Dubai International’s mean daily low in January is 15.3 °C, with a mean high of 24.4 °C. The desert falls colder than the coast after dark. From November to March bring a warm layer, and in December and January a proper jacket. The best time for a desert safari guide covers each month, and the Dubai weather by month guide gives the city figures.

What to pack

  • A warm layer for the night and early morning.
  • Shoes you can shake sand out of.
  • A small overnight bag with toiletries and any medication.
  • A torch or phone light for the walk to the bathroom.
  • A power bank, since charging points at camps vary.

Our what to wear on a desert safari guide has the season-by-season clothing list.

Who it suits, and children

It suits couples, small groups and families who want sunrise and a quiet camp. It does not suit anyone who needs a fixed bedtime or a hotel bed.

Each operator sets its own dune-drive rules. Arabian Adventures does not take expectant mothers or guests with pre-existing medical conditions on its dune drive. In the car, a child seat is required under age 4. Read the private vs shared desert safari guide if you want the dunes to yourselves.

The morning return

Collection time is set around a hotel checkout or a flight. Dubai International is 47 km from Lahbab, about 55 minutes without traffic, so a late-morning flight can follow the night at camp. See the day trips from Dubai hub for ideas to fill the rest of the day.

Questions and answers

What time do you get picked up for an overnight desert safari?

Mid-afternoon, timed to reach the dunes before sunset. In mid-December the sun sets at about 5:31 pm near Lahbab, and the drive from Downtown Dubai is 48 km, about 45 minutes without traffic. Your quote sets the exact pickup time and the next morning's collection time.

Is the desert cold at night in Dubai?

Yes, in winter. Dubai International averages a January low of 15.3 °C, and the open desert is colder than the city once the sun goes down. Pack a fleece or jacket, socks and a warm layer to sleep in. Summer nights stay warm, which is why camping is a November to March trip.

Are there toilets and air conditioning at the camp?

It depends on the camp, so ask before you pay. Some camps have a shared bathroom block, others give a group its own. Heating or air conditioning varies by tent or room type. Tell us if you need a private bathroom for children or older guests, and the quote states what your camp provides.

Can children do an overnight desert safari?

Usually yes, though each camp sets its own rules. Give every child's age when you enquire. In the car, UAE rules require a child seat under age 4, and no front seat up to age 10 or below 145 cm. Ask for a tent or room close to the bathroom and pack a torch.

What time do you get back to Dubai the next day?

After breakfast at a time you choose. Mid-December sunrise is at about 6:53 am. The drive back is about 45 minutes to Downtown Dubai and 55 minutes to Dubai Marina without traffic. If you have a flight, Dubai International is 47 km from Lahbab, so allow extra time for check-in.

Is the overnight safari different from the evening one?

The first half is the same: pickup, dunes, sunset and dinner. The difference is the night. An evening safari such as Arabian Adventures' leaves the camp at 9:30 pm. On the overnight you stay, sleep in the desert, see sunrise and have breakfast before the drive back.
