Dune buggy tours in Dubai

Assure arranges self-drive dune buggy rides in the red dunes around Lahbab, about 48 km from Downtown Dubai. A private car with a chauffeur drives your group there and back. You choose a 2-seat or 4-seat buggy, the riding time and the slot. The machine, age limits and price come back in one WhatsApp quote.

The day, stop by stop

Times are a guide. Your driver keeps to your group's pace.

  1. Pickup in Dubai

Your chauffeur collects the group from your hotel, home or office at the time in your quote.

The operator's marshal fits helmets and goes through the pedals, seat belts and route before anyone drives.

  4. Riding minutes as booked

    Buggy drive in the dunes

Buggies usually run in convoy behind the operator's lead vehicle, with a stop on a high dune for photos.

  5. Back to your car

The chauffeur is parked at the base, so you leave when your group is ready.

  6. Drop-off

Back to your door, or on to lunch, a mall or the airport.

What you drive

A dune buggy is a side-by-side off-road vehicle: seats next to each other, a steering wheel, pedals, seat belts and a roll cage over your head. Can-Am is the make Dubai riders search for most, and several riding sites name the Can-Am Maverick X3. The exact machine depends on the operator and the date, so your quote names it.

Your own car to Lahbab and back

Buggy packages sold in Dubai often come with a shared van that loops through several hotels before the dunes. Assure sends a private car for your group only. The chauffeur parks at the riding base, waits while you drive and takes you back when you are ready.

From Downtown Dubai the chauffeur takes Ras Al Khor Road and the Dubai to Hatta road (E44), then turns onto the Jebel Ali to Lahbab road (E77). From Dubai Marina the car heads out on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (E311) and the Dubai to Al Ain road (E66) instead.

Pickup Road distance to Lahbab Drive time without traffic
Downtown Dubai 48 km about 45 minutes
Dubai International (DXB) 47 km about 55 minutes
Dubai Marina or Palm Jumeirah 63 km just under 1 hour
Sharjah city 57 km about 50 minutes

Distances are OSRM road figures. Rush hour on the E44 and E311 adds time, so the pickup in your quote allows for it. Want lunch on the way back, or a mall afterwards? Book the car as a car with a driver by the hour.

Which slot to pick

You name your slot when you ask for a quote, and the operator confirms it for the date. The morning slot is the coolest from May to September, when midday sand gets too hot for comfort. In winter the sunset slot fills first: the sun sets at about 17:30 at Lahbab in mid-December and about 19:10 in mid-June.

If you are torn between the cool start and the evening light, our guide to morning or evening in the desert sets out what changes with each.

Age, licence and safety gear

ROHVA, the US industry body for side-by-sides, gives three rules that matter here:

  • Drive one only if you are 16 or older and hold a valid driver’s licence.
  • Always fasten the seat belt, wear a helmet and keep arms and legs inside the cage.
  • Carry no more passengers than there are seats, and no passenger too small to sit properly in one.

Desert operators in Dubai set their own minimum ages for drivers and passengers. Send every rider’s age with your request, and we confirm who can drive and who rides as a passenger before you pay.

Buggies jolt hard over dune crests. If anyone in the group is pregnant or has back or neck problems, tell us first: the operator decides who rides. Wear closed shoes and long trousers, and keep a scarf handy for the sand. Our desert clothing guide covers the rest by season.

Add a buggy to a safari, or ride a quad instead

A buggy ride fits neatly before a sunrise or morning desert safari, since both run out to the same dunes. It also works in the afternoon ahead of the evening desert safari with camp dinner, with the car taking you on from the riding base to the camp.

If someone in your group would rather have a machine to themselves, a quad bike ride carries one rider and can run in the same slot.

What sets the price

  • A 2-seat or 4-seat buggy, and how many buggies the group needs
  • The riding minutes
  • The slot: sunset in winter is the busiest
  • The car that drives you: a Lexus ES 300h for 3, a GMC Yukon or Cadillac Escalade for 6, a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter for 13 or 19
  • Where you are picked up, and whether the car stays on afterwards

Prices are quoted on WhatsApp, with each part listed.

Straight from the airport

Land in the morning and ride the same day. Your chauffeur meets you in the arrivals hall with your name on a board, and the bags stay in the boot while you drive. The DXB airport pickup page covers each terminal; Lahbab is 47 km from the airport.

Read is dune bashing safe before you book. What to wear on a desert safari covers clothing, and the best time for a desert safari covers the season.

Add an airport transfer

Landing the same day? The same booking can include your pickup from any UAE airport, with your name on a board in arrivals.

Questions and answers

How much does a dune buggy cost in Dubai?

Five things set it: a 2-seat or 4-seat buggy, the riding minutes, the slot, the size of your car and the pickup area. A couple from Downtown in a Lexus ES 300h costs less than six people from Dubai Marina in a GMC Yukon. Send your group, date and pickup on WhatsApp and the quote lists each part.

Do I need a driving licence to drive a dune buggy in Dubai?

Plan on it. ROHVA, the US industry body for side-by-side vehicles, says never to drive one unless you are 16 or older and hold a valid driver's licence. Desert operators in Dubai set their own rules for drivers, so bring your licence and send the age of each driver when you ask for a quote. We confirm who can drive before you book.

How long is a dune buggy ride?

The riding time is what you book, and it is written in your quote in minutes. The trip around it adds roughly 45 minutes each way between Downtown Dubai and the Lahbab dunes, plus the briefing at the base. A 1 hour ride from Downtown usually means about 3 to 3.5 hours door to door; from Dubai Marina, allow closer to 4.

Can children ride in a dune buggy?

Children can usually ride as passengers in a buggy, not drive one. ROHVA says a passenger must be big enough to sit properly in the seat, and every rider wears a belt and helmet. A 4-seat buggy lets a parent drive with two or three children aboard. Send the children's ages and the operator confirms the lowest age it accepts on your date.

Where do dune buggy rides from Dubai take place?

Most riding bases sit in the red dunes around Lahbab, on the Jebel Ali to Lahbab road (E77). It is about 48 km from Downtown Dubai and 47 km from Dubai International Airport, under an hour by road without traffic. The exact base depends on the operator, and your chauffeur gets the location pin before pickup.

What is the difference between a dune buggy and a quad bike?

A dune buggy seats 2 or 4 people side by side, with a steering wheel, pedals, seat belts and a roll cage. A quad bike carries one rider astride the seat, steering with handlebars and leaning into the turns. Buggies suit couples and families who want to ride together. Quads suit people who want their own machine.

Can we go in our own car instead of the shared van?

Yes, that is how Assure books it. A private car collects only your group and waits at the riding base while you drive. It leaves when you are ready, with no loop of other hotels on the way back. For 2 or 3 people that is a Lexus ES 300h; for up to 6, a GMC Yukon, Cadillac Escalade or Mercedes-Benz V-Class.
