Dubai sells three kinds of aerial tour, and they are not interchangeable. One suits a free afternoon, one needs a pre-dawn start, and two can be cancelled by a hazy day. This guide helps you pick before you book on the helicopter tour page or the hot air balloon page.
The three at a glance
| Helicopter | Seaplane | Hot air balloon | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time of day | Daytime slots | Daytime slots | Sunrise only |
| What you see | Skyline, Palm Jumeirah, coast | Coastline from the air | Desert and dunes |
| Landing | Heliport | On water | Open desert |
| Early start | No | No | Yes, pre-dawn pickup |
| Weather risk | Wind, haze | Wind, sea state, haze | Wind |
| Take-off point | Set by the operator | Jebel Ali Seaplane Base (DJH) | Desert launch site |
Operators confirm flight length, route options, minimum age and weight limits. We do not state them here, because they change by operator and aircraft.
Helicopter: the city from the air

The helicopter is the quickest way to place Dubai’s landmarks in relation to each other. The Palm Jumeirah, the Marina and the Downtown towers sit along one stretch of coast, so a short flight can cover several. Because it flies in daytime slots, you pick a time that suits your day.
Choose it when:
- you have one afternoon and want the skyline
- you are travelling with someone who dislikes early starts
- you want a flight you can fit around a hotel check-out
Photography is the usual reason people book it. If the light matters to you, ask the operator which slots fall close to sunset. In mid-December sunset is about 5:30 pm and in mid-June about 7:05 pm, using the NOAA calculator, so the golden hour moves by an hour and a half across the year.
Seaplane: the coast and a water landing

The seaplane flies from the Jebel Ali Seaplane Base, operated by Seawings, and runs circular flights from there. Its draw is the landing on water, not the skyline alone. Because the base is at Jebel Ali, the drive from Downtown is a real leg of the trip.
Choose it when:
- you want something different from a helicopter
- you like the idea of a fixed-wing aircraft that lands on water
- you are staying on the Marina or Palm Jumeirah side of the city, close to Jebel Ali
Hot air balloon: stillness over the desert

The balloon is the slow one. It launches near sunrise, drifts with the wind and lands wherever the pilot can put it down. For scale, the Lahbab dunes are 48 km and about 43 minutes from Downtown by road without traffic, and the launch site is in the same kind of desert. The full morning is described in our what to expect on a hot air balloon ride guide.
Choose it when:
- you are happy with a 4 am wake-up
- you have a spare morning in case of a wind cancellation
- you want the desert without the dune-bashing
How weather changes the choice
Wind cancels a balloon. Haze and low visibility can ground helicopters and seaplanes. In July and August, heat and humidity make everything outdoors harder, and the Dubai in summer guide and the month-by-month weather guide show how the season changes the day. If you are visiting in winter, the best time to visit Dubai guide covers the clearest months.
Whatever you book, put it early in the trip. A cancelled flight with no spare day means no ride.
How to get there
Each of the three starts somewhere different: a heliport, an airfield at Jebel Ali, or a hotel pickup in the dark. A private car with a driver covers all three. The chauffeur drops you at the right entrance and waits, so you are not looking for a taxi after a flight. Send the operator, date and hotel on WhatsApp for a quote.
Where aerial tours fit in a longer plan

Pair a morning balloon with a free afternoon and an evening on the Marina. Pair a helicopter flight with a visit to the Downtown towers. Our day trips from Dubai hub and the places to visit in Dubai guide lay out how those days connect.
