A hot air balloon flight is the one Dubai tour where the calendar is set by the sun and the weather, not by you. This guide covers what the morning looks like, why flights get cancelled, which limits to ask about and how the early pickup works. The booking itself is on the hot air balloon tour page.
What does the morning look like?

The order is the same for most operators:
- Pre-dawn pickup. A vehicle collects you from your hotel or home in the dark.
- Drive to the desert launch site. For scale, the Lahbab dunes are 48 km and about 43 minutes from Downtown Dubai without traffic. Your operator names the actual launch site.
- Inflation and briefing. The crew inflates the balloon while it is still cool. You get a safety talk and climb into the basket.
- The flight. The balloon rises as the light comes up and drifts with the wind. There is no steering, so the pilot picks the landing area from the wind on the day.
- Landing and return. The crew recovers the balloon, then you are driven back to the hotel. Breakfast or a falcon show may be part of it, depending on the operator.
Ask the operator which of these is included in your ticket. The balloon page lists what each option covers.
What time will you be collected?

Balloons launch around sunrise, so the pickup is well before it. Using the NOAA solar calculator, sunrise in Dubai is about 6:55 am in mid-December and about 5:30 am in mid-June. That puts the pickup in the dark in every month of the year. The operator sets the exact time after booking.
A morning flight also means a late night is a bad idea. If you land at Dubai International the evening before, Terminal 3 and Terminal 1 arrivals are close enough to most hotels that you can sleep a few hours before a 4 am start. Plan the flight for a day when you are not arriving or leaving.
Why do flights get cancelled?

Wind and visibility decide. The pilot checks the conditions at the launch site on the morning, and a balloon does not fly if the wind is too strong or the air is hazy. The call can come after you have already been collected.
What to do about it:
- Ask the operator, before paying, what happens on a cancelled morning: refund, or a replacement date.
- Do not book the balloon on your last morning in Dubai. If the flight is cancelled and you have no spare day, you miss the ride.
- Keep the day after free if you can.
Summer has its own problems. Heat and humidity make summer mornings harder, so ask the operator how it handles the season. The month-by-month weather guide and the summer in Dubai guide explain what to expect.
What limits should you ask about?
Operators set their own limits, and they differ. Ask for these in writing:
- minimum age
- maximum passenger weight
- pregnancy
- mobility: you must be able to climb into the basket and stand for the landing
- the operator’s aviation licence details
Families should read the Dubai with kids guide first. A pre-dawn start is a hard one for small children.
What should you wear?
Mornings in the desert are cooler than the city, particularly from November to February. Wear layers, closed shoes and sunglasses. Bring a light jacket you can take off once the sun is up. The desert safari clothing guide covers sand and sun, and most of it applies here.
Shared bus or a private car for the pickup?
Many balloon tickets include a shared vehicle that loops through hotels in the dark, so a pickup window can mean waiting in the lobby at 4 am. A private car with a driver collects only your group at a time you agree with the operator’s schedule, and waits for you at the end. This is the part Assure adds. The balloon ticket stays with the operator, and the car is quoted on WhatsApp.
Balloon, helicopter or seaplane?
If you are still choosing between the three aerial options, the helicopter, seaplane and balloon comparison puts them side by side. If the balloon is one stop in a longer plan, the day trips from Dubai hub shows where it fits, and the morning versus evening desert safari guide helps if you also want dunes on the same trip.
