Private vs shared tours in the UAE: what changes and who each suits

A shared tour sells you a seat on a fixed route and timetable, usually after several hotel pickups. A private tour gives your group the car, the driver and the order of stops. The choice comes down to time, flexibility and group size, because you pay per seat on one and per car on the other.

What is the difference between a private and a shared tour?

On a shared tour you buy one seat in a coach or minibus. The operator sets the route, the stops and the timetable, and you travel with other guests. On a private tour your group has the car and the driver to itself. You decide the order of stops, how long to stay and where the day ends.

Both can visit the same places. What changes is who controls the day.

Time: pickup loops, fixed stops and waiting for others

Shared tours collect guests from several hotels before the main route begins. Each extra pickup adds minutes, and the vehicle waits for late guests. Pickup windows are set by the operator, so ask for yours in writing before you book.

A private car makes one pickup, at your door, at the time you choose. If your group is ready at 8:30, the car leaves at 8:30.

Once you are at a site, a shared tour has a fixed time slot to get back to the coach. A private driver waits on your schedule.

Flexibility: changing stops, adding lunch, finishing at the airport

A private day lets you:

  • swap one stop for another on the morning of the trip
  • add a long lunch or a rest at the hotel for children
  • stay longer where the group is enjoying itself
  • finish at DXB Terminal 3, Zayed International or your hotel instead of a fixed drop-off

A shared tour cannot change its route for one family. That is the trade-off for a lower price per person.

Families travelling with children usually feel the difference most. Our Dubai with kids guide covers pacing a day around nap times and heat.

Cost: per seat or per car, and where the break-even sits

Shared tours are priced per seat. Private tours are priced per vehicle, not per person. We do not publish prices, and quotes come on WhatsApp.

The maths is simple. A solo traveller pays for the whole car on a private tour. A group of 4 or 6 splits it. Our Mercedes-Benz V-Class and GMC Yukon each seat 6 passengers, and the Sprinter minibuses seat 13 and 19.

So the break-even moves with your group size. To compare fairly, ask each operator for the total for your whole group, including:

  • hotel pickup and drop-off
  • waiting time at each site
  • fuel, road tolls and parking
  • tickets, if the shared price includes them

If the shared tour price covers entry tickets and the private quote does not, the two are not like for like.

Hop-on hop-off bus, shared coach or private car in Dubai

A hop-on hop-off bus suits a first day when you want to see the skyline. For the Old Dubai and Downtown route a private car is easier with children or in the heat. Our Dubai city tour by private car shows how such a day is laid out.

Which tours are worth doing privately, and which are fine shared

Private pays off when the road is a big part of the day:

  • Abu Dhabi. The capital is 139 km from Dubai by road, about 1 h 28 min without traffic (OSRM, OpenStreetMap, checked 17 October 2026). A private car lets you fit the Grand Mosque, the Louvre and the Corniche in your own order. See the Abu Dhabi city tour.
  • Hatta. About 109 km from Dubai, around 1 h 26 min without traffic (OSRM). Your own departure time beats the coach convoy.
  • Musandam. You cross the border at Dibba, so a flexible return time matters. Our Musandam tour page lists what to bring.
  • Desert trips. The shared and private options differ in more ways. Read private vs shared desert safari.

Shared tours are fine when:

  • you are travelling alone and the budget is tight
  • the site is a short ticketed visit where the timetable is rigid anyway, such as a dhow cruise
  • you want company and a ready-made group

For a full list of options, see our private tours page and the day trips from Dubai guide.

What a private tour does not include unless you book it

A private car and driver does not automatically come with:

  • A licensed guide. Commentary inside mosques, museums and old quarters comes from a guide, not the driver. Tourist guiding in Dubai is regulated by the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), so ask any guide you hire for their licence. See do you need a guide or just a driver.
  • Tickets. Entry is normally bought separately. Plan which sites need advance booking.
  • Meals. Lunch is usually at your own cost unless the quote states otherwise.

For a day without a set route, an hourly booking with a chauffeur works too. The hourly vs transfer comparison explains how that differs from a fixed tour. Attractions that are far from the Metro are covered in Dubai attractions by car, and our chauffeur service page lists the cars.

We can also source a partner vehicle, if one is free that day.

Questions and answers

Is a private tour worth it in Dubai?

It is worth it when you travel as a family or group of 3 or more, want to change the order of stops, or have a fixed flight to catch. A private car is priced per vehicle, so the gap per person narrows as the group grows. Solo travellers on a tight budget often do fine on a shared tour.

What is the main difference between a private and a shared tour?

On a shared tour you join a coach or minibus with other guests on a set route and timetable. On a private tour only your group rides in the car, and you agree the stops, the pace and the finish point with the driver beforehand.

Is a hop-on hop-off bus the same as a shared tour?

Not quite. A hop-on hop-off bus is a fixed loop you board at designated stops, and you manage your own time between them. A shared coach tour usually collects you from a hotel and moves the whole group together. A private car goes only where your group asks.

Does a private tour include a tour guide?

Not unless you book one. A chauffeur drives, plans timings and waits for you, but guided commentary inside sites comes from a licensed guide. Ask when you request your quote whether a guide can be added for your date and language.

Do private tours include entry tickets?

Not by default. Attraction tickets are usually bought separately, either online from the venue or through our attraction tickets page. State the sites you want when you ask for a quote and we confirm what is and is not covered.

Which UAE tours are best done privately?

Day trips with long road legs gain most from a private car: Abu Dhabi, Musandam, Hatta and Jebel Jais. The drive is a large part of the day, so setting your own departure time and stopping for lunch or photos matters more than on a short city loop.

Can a private tour end at the airport?

Yes. A private tour can finish at your terminal, and that is one of its main advantages over a shared coach, which returns to a set drop-off point. Give your flight number so the driver can plan the final leg.
