Dibba or Khasab: which is better for you?
Musandam is the tip of the peninsula above Ras Al Khaimah. It belongs to Oman but is cut off from the rest of the country, so you reach it by road through the UAE. Two towns serve as the start of a day on the water.
Dibba is the shorter trip. Khasab is the bigger one. If you have a single day and want to be home for dinner, pick Dibba. If the fjords are the point of the trip, pick Khasab and think about a night there.
Side by side
| Dibba | Khasab | |
|---|---|---|
| From Downtown Dubai | about 146 km, 1 h 50 min | about 195 km, 2 h 40 min |
| From Dubai Marina | about 165 km, 2 h 7 min | about 213 km, 2 h 53 min |
| Border post | Dibba crossing, run by the Royal Oman Police since 26 February 2025 | Al Darah (UAE), then Tibat (Oman) |
| Roads | E311, E611, E87, then the Masafi to Dibba road (E89) | E311, E611, then the E18 along the coast |
| Total driving, return | about 3 h 45 min | about 5 h 15 min |
| On the water | Gulf of Oman side, sheltered bays | Khor Ash Sham fjord and Telegraph Island |
| Best for | A single day out and back | A longer day, or a night in Khasab |
Drive times are OSRM figures on OpenStreetMap data, without traffic or border queues. Allow extra for the stops, since you pass a UAE post and an Omani post in each direction. Our guide to Musandam border and visa rules and the wider UAE-Oman border crossings guide explain the order at each post.
What a Dibba dhow day looks like
Dibba is split three ways. Dibba Al-Bay’ah is Omani and one of Musandam’s four wilayats. Dibba Al-Hisn belongs to Sharjah and Dibba Al-Fujairah to Fujairah. The dhows leave from the Omani side, so the car crosses the border before you board.

Your day runs along the Gulf of Oman side, in bays that are sheltered from open water. Lunch, swim and snorkel stops depend on the dhow, so your quote lists them. If your hotel is on the east coast instead, our places to visit in Fujairah covers the UAE side of the same shore.
What a Khasab day looks like
Khasab is the capital of Musandam and sits near the Strait of Hormuz. The route runs north through Ras Al Khaimah on the E18 to the Al Darah post, about 150 km and 1 h 50 min from Downtown Dubai. After Tibat the coast road runs about 45 km to Khasab port.

Khasab dhows head into Khor Ash Sham, also called Elphinstone Inlet. Telegraph Island sits less than 400 m off its shore, where a British telegraph repeater station worked from 1864. Operators often mention dolphins, but no operator can promise a sighting. We did not find an official landing rule for the island, so ask your dhow operator whether you stay on board.
Which suits families, divers and first-timers?
- First-timers and families with young children: Dibba. The shorter drive means fewer hours in the car and an earlier return.
- Scenery seekers: Khasab, for the narrow fjord. Break the drive with a night if you can.
- Divers and snorkellers: ask the dhow operator which stops have the clearest water on your date. Dibba and Khasab both offer swim stops.
- Anyone with a single-entry visa: read the note on re-entry below before choosing either.

Every traveller, children included, needs an original passport. Some nationalities also need an Omani eVisa. The Oman visa guide for UAE residents explains who does.
On re-entry, a single-entry tourist visa is described by GDRFA as an entry visa for a single visit. For a same-day return you need a multiple-entry visa, a new UAE visa or a passport that gets a visa on arrival.
Overnight in Khasab, and hotel transfers
A night in Khasab splits the 5 h 15 min of driving across two days. Hotels in Musandam include Atana Khasab and Six Senses Zighy Bay. We quote hotel transfers on request, so send the hotel name and the dates. See the Dubai to Khasab transfer for one-way drops.
You could also pair the drive north with a morning on Jebel Jais, and our guide to places to visit in Ras Al Khaimah shows what else sits on the way.
Private car and private dhow options
Assure drives the road leg in a private car with a chauffeur. The dhow comes from a partner operator, shared or private, subject to availability. A private dhow suits a family or a group that wants its own timings. Details of both trips are on our Musandam tours page. The day trips from Dubai hub lists the other options, and the Fujairah east coast tour is the no-border alternative.
