Dubai layover: can you leave the airport, how long you need and a private-car plan

You can leave Dubai Airport on a layover if you are allowed to enter the UAE and have enough time. Dubai Airports advises arriving 3 hours before departure, so a 6-hour layover leaves about an hour in the city. From 8 hours you can see Downtown by private car, and with 10 hours or more you can add Jumeirah.

Can you leave DXB on a layover?

It depends on your passport, not your airline. Dubai Airports says visitors of certain nationalities can get a visa on arrival if their transit time is longer than 8 hours. Other passports need a visa before they fly. GDRFA Dubai also runs a 48 or 96-hour transit visa service for foreign nationals transiting UAE airports.

We do not restate visa rules here, because they change. Read our Dubai transit visa guide and the visa pages, then confirm with your airline. If you cannot enter, stay airside.

Also check the ticket. A single ticket to your final destination usually checks your bags through, and then your bag is not with you. On separate tickets you collect it yourself. Our self-transfer guide covers that case.

How many hours do you really need?

Work backwards from your next flight. Dubai Airports advises arriving 3 hours before departure. You then need time for passport control and baggage reclaim, plus the drive each way.

Layover Time in the city, roughly What fits
6 hours about 1 hour Stay airside, or a quick car loop to the Burj Khalifa area
8 hours about 3 hours Downtown and Dubai Mall
10 hours about 5 hours Downtown, then the Jumeirah coast
12 hours about 7 hours The above, plus Dubai Creek or an evening at the Marina

These are Assure’s estimates. They assume about 1 hour to clear passport control and collect bags, 3 hours at the airport before departure, and a drive of 17 to 32 minutes each way to Downtown. A busy arrivals hall, or a remote stand, takes more. Our arrival process guide shows the steps in order.

A 6-hour plan: the Burj Khalifa area and Dubai Creek

Six hours is tight. After clearing the airport and keeping the 3-hour buffer, you have about an hour. Use it on one stop.

Downtown Dubai is about 15 km from the Terminal 1 car park, 17 minutes without traffic, and about 21 km from Terminal 3, 32 minutes (OSRM, OpenStreetMap). A car takes you to the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall area, a short walk, and back. Dubai Creek is closer to the airport: Deira’s Al Rigga is about 14 km from Terminal 3.

If your flight is unlikely to leave on time, or your queue at passport control is long, do not push it. Staying airside costs you nothing. Missing a flight does.

An 8 to 10-hour plan: Downtown first, then Jumeirah

With 8 hours, take Downtown: the Burj Khalifa precinct, Dubai Mall and the waterfront around them. Book any attraction ticket before you land, and check the official site for opening hours on your day.

With 10 hours, add the Jumeirah coast, then the Palm. The Atlantis end of Palm Jumeirah is about 37 km from the Terminal 1 car park (37 minutes without traffic) and 44 km from Terminal 3 (55 minutes). That is a long return, so do the Palm last and leave early. Our Dubai city tour is the set route, and a car with driver by the hour lets you change it.

What do you do with your bags?

Two options. Left luggage in the terminal where you land is open 24/7. Dubai Airports lists AED 40 for a standard bag at Terminals 1 and 2 and AED 35 at Terminal 3, for up to 12 hours. Our luggage storage guide has the counters and size limits.

Or keep the bags in the car. Tell us on WhatsApp how many cases you have, and we match the vehicle. A sedan takes about 2 large suitcases.

Getting back in time: the return buffer

Set your return time at the start of the day, not the end. Take your departure time, subtract at least 3 hours, then subtract the drive from your last stop. That is when the car must leave.

If you need to collect bags from left luggage first, add that queue. Our guide to airport departure timing explains the buffer in more detail. Your chauffeur tracks the clock too, and tells you when to head back.

Emirates Dubai Connect and long connections

Emirates runs Dubai Connect for eligible passengers with extended transit times, which it describes as 6 to 26 hours. It offers a hotel stay, airport transfers and meals, and a UAE visa where one is required. It is subject to availability and Emirates terms, so ask Emirates about your ticket.

If you take it, you can still book a private car for the day. Use the car to see the city before you check in, or after you check out.

12 hours or overnight: add the Marina or an evening desert safari

With 12 hours, you can finish in the evening at the Marina. Dubai Marina is about 33 km from the Terminal 1 car park, 31 minutes without traffic, and about 40 km from Terminal 3, 48 minutes.

An overnight stay lets you do more. Plan the first day around the city and the second morning around your flight. For more ground to cover from DXB, DXB to Downtown Dubai shows the first drive in detail, and our DXB airport transfer page covers pickup at all three terminals. Our guide to every UAE airport is the overview.

Questions and answers

Can you leave Dubai Airport during a layover?

Yes, if your passport allows entry to the UAE and you have time. Dubai Airports says visitors of certain nationalities can get a visa on arrival if the transit time is longer than 8 hours. Others need a visa in advance. Check your passport against the official rules before you fly, and read our visa pages.

How many hours do you need for a Dubai layover trip?

At least 8 hours. Dubai Airports advises arriving 3 hours before departure, and you also need time to clear passport control and bags and to drive each way. A 6-hour layover leaves about an hour in the city, an 8-hour one about 3 hours, and 10 hours about 5.

What can you see in 6 to 8 hours in Dubai?

One area, not three. Downtown Dubai is about 15 km from Terminal 1 and 21 km from Terminal 3, 17 to 32 minutes without traffic. That is enough for the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall area, or an hour at Dubai Creek in Deira. Add Jumeirah only if you have 10 hours.

What do you do with your bags on a Dubai layover?

Leave them at left luggage in your arrival terminal, open 24/7. Dubai Airports lists AED 40 for a standard bag at Terminals 1 and 2 and AED 35 at Terminal 3, for up to 12 hours. Or keep them in a private car for the whole trip. Tell us the bag count when you book.

How early should you be back at the airport after a layover tour?

Dubai Airports advises arriving 3 hours before departure. If you are collecting bags from left luggage and checking in again, that figure matters more than the sights. Build the day backwards from your departure time, then add the drive from your last stop. We set the pickup time for you.

What is Emirates Dubai Connect?

A programme from Emirates for eligible passengers with extended transit times, which Emirates describes as 6 to 26 hours. It offers a hotel stay, airport transfers and meals, and a UAE entry visa where one is required. It is subject to availability and Emirates terms, so check eligibility for your ticket on emirates.com.

Is a 12-hour or overnight layover worth leaving the airport for?

Yes. With 12 hours you can see Downtown, drive the Jumeirah coast and still sit in a hotel or restaurant before heading back, or add an evening at the Marina. Overnight stays are easier through a hotel with an airport transfer. Dubai Connect may cover it on an Emirates ticket.
